I have around 150 to 200 old family tin types. Some are pretty dusty and dirty, some are over 120 years old. I want to clean them up a bit, has anyone ever done this? I am also wondering which way would you scrap them? In their original form or scan them in and print them?
Here are two examples:

Jennie, a Great Great Aunt:

Any suggestions?

No help from me, but WOW you are so lucky to have great old family photos!... Check with a local museum and see if they could help you out or direct you to a photo restorer. They would probably have the answer...............................P

I don't have any info on cleaning the tin types, but would check with the local Historical Society for a suggestion on an expert on old "photos" - if there isn't a museum nearby. You might also check with any large, reputable photo center near you for advice. If you find anything, I'd appreciate seeing what you find! I also have some - no where near that many though - that could use some cleaning.

I'm planning on scanning & printing mine for the scrapbook. (Yes, I've finally purchased some supplies to try this! :teeth: ) I think that the book would end up being way too heavy if you use the actual tin types. And who knows what there might be in them that could destroy other old photos you might use.

that is AWESOME

I would scan - touch up if needed then print and scrap them leaving them in the original state - Imaybe contact the historical sociaety or I know there is a place in MA that specializes in 'photo restoration' maybe you seek out one of those!
have Fun

I have no suggestions just wanted to say thanks for sharing those photos. I wish I had old photo like that.
