We had a whirlpool tub that was sitting for at least a year or longer. My Brother inlaw installed it and we are trying to clean out all the jets and lines.

Anybody know of a good way to clean out the system. Lots of guck:scared1: coming out.

I know they sell a cleaner kit but who wants to spend the money until you know if it works good.

We have heard of bleach or vinager or dishwasher tablets added to a tub full of hot water and then let the jets run.

Anyone have any handy tips or ideas?

TIA

I would use vinegar or amonia in a full tub of hot water and let the jets work out for a few minutes. Was it that dirty or stained? Bleach or dishwasher detergent seems too harsh, but that's just my opinion. When we bought our small hot tub we were told not to even use soap/bubble bath as it might clog the jets. Well we use bubble bath and have had no problems. That cheap orange oil spray works really well around the tub (ring around the tub) without much scrubbing, and it doesn't scratch at all. Hope that helps. :)

Thanks!!

No problem with stains. I'm not sure why it is so icky. Maybe there was still some water left in the lines somewhere when it was removed. (It originally belonged to my MiL who gave it to us. We decided to put in a large shower in our basement instead of the whirlpool tub (We have a hot tub outside) and gave this to BiL who needed a tub.

It sat in the garage for a few months, then in our unfinished (but being worked on basement) for at least a year and now it has been installed. We just need to figure out how to clean it so it is sanitary to bath in. No floaties coming out.

I will have him try the vinager or amonia to start with. It may take a few runs to clear it out.

We had a whirlpool tub a few years ago and we were told by the place we bought it to put in I think a cup of powdered dishwasher detergent and let it run. You need to do this even after you get it cleaned because it gets dirty in the jets. HOnestly I cannot remember the exact amount but it is something like that. You might call around to someplace that sells them and ask.

Did you use it? Did it work good? Did it take alot of rinsing to get all the soap out?

TIA

1/2 box of dishwasher detergent with very hot water and let it run through with jets on. then empty and fill with cold water and run jets to rinse out. That works for ours and that is what the builder told us to use. Good luck:goodvibes

I do the bleach/dishwasher detergent combo. Fill tub with hot water.. add 1/2 cup of bleach & a few tablespoons of dishwasher powder. Run that through for 15 min, then fill with cold water & run through for another 15. It worked well for me!

The dishwasher powder works really well. I use that in the pedicure tubs at work. Also, if you want to "sanitize" it, don't use bleach, it can be too harsh on the pipes and fittings. Go to a spa/pool store or even Walmart this time of year and get a shock for a hot tub. A small container will last forever and it's not very expensive. Run that through for a little while, it works like a charm and it's designed not to to damage the interior parts.

Happy cleaning! :thumbsup2

This is what I do also.

Well to clean a dishwasher you use powdered tang. Stronger than dish washer detergent, but not sure you would want to use that in the jets. BTW it makes the house smell great.

We ran hot water and dishwasher soap through the system 4 times. The 4th time it was all clean as a whistle!!! :cool1:

Thank you everyone!!!!!

Just a warning, DO NOT mix ammonia and bleach. this combo will create a toxic gas.
