Clarifying current points situation if I cancel a room

Hi all,

We have a large family trip scheduled for November. It involves multiple rooms (which are all booked) including a Grand Villa, a 2 BR, and two separate studios. All at BWV.

It looks like one of the parties may now not be able to join us, thus I am contemplating canceling one of the studio rooms. But I want to be sure as I know I won’t be able to get it back should something change.

As that was the last room I booked these were all borrowed points from my December 2021 use year. I’ve lost track of what the current rules are so I’m trying to figure out the following:

- Is there still an option to have borrowed points returned to their original used year, or is that no longer an option?

- If that is an option, could I cancel some of the nights but not all of them and still have some points returned to the Dec 2021 use year?

- If retuning the points to my 2021 use year is not an option and I do cancel either all (or some) of the nights , can I reallocate those points into one of the other existing Nov reservations? My concern is that since these are borrowed into the current year they will expire November 30th and I think they would be hard to rent given limited DVC availability. Plus I’d love to have them available for my own use in 2022.

- Lastly, I think there was something about an April or May date where one of the temporary rules was being discontinued. Would that impact this decision at all in terms of timing (I know I got the email, but can’t for the life of me find it or remember what it referred to 😬).

Many thanks in advance for any clarification!

I think you are just in time. The returning of borrowed points and no withholding will end April 30th.
I would cancel the room now, and if the borrowed points are not returned by Thursday end of day, call MS to return them manually.

Right now, if you cancel all the borrowed points go back. That ends on April 30th, so if you want that, do it at least a few days before that.

You can cancel some and whatever points are freed up, will go back. If you cancel the rest after April 30th, they will be stuck.

If you do end up waiting and end up with borrowed points, you can simply reallocate by modifying one of the other rooms, follow it to the end, and rebook it without having changed anything, and it will use the borrowed points, as long as the contract they are in is checked. It will then free up current UY points that can be banked.

The COVID rules that suspended holding if you cancel 30 days or less out from arrival and send borrowed points in a cancelled reservation back to thier original use year end April 30. Thus, if you cancel by then, borrowed points from the cancelled reservation will be returned to their original use year. If you cancel on or after May 1, all rules that existed before COVID apply except the 50% maximum borrowing rule adopted during COVID, which rule continues after April 30..

if you wait until May 1 or after to cancel, the borrowed points from the cancelled reservation will expire unless used by the end of the current use year. They can be used to replace other points in one of the remaining reservations via a modification of the reservation only if:

(a) the points are BWV points if the BWV reservation being modified was made during the 11-month window — if the original reservation was made during the 7-month window, borrowed points from another resort can be used in the modification, and

(b) any such attempted modification of one of the remaining reservations by taking out current use year points and putting in borrowed points must comply with the 50% maximum borrowed points rule even if you made the original reservations before that rule was put into place and borrowed more than 50% of your next year's points

Is there still an option to have borrowed points returned to their original used year, or is that no longer an option?
You have until April 30 to cancel and have borrowed points returned to their original UY.
If that is an option, could I cancel some of the nights but not all of them and still have some points returned to the Dec 2021 use year?
Possibly. It depends on whether any of you current annual allotment of points were also used for that reservation. Current points will be freed up before any borrowed points if you cancel only part of a reservation that uses both.
If returning the points to my 2021 use year is not an option and I do cancel either all (or some) of the nights , can I reallocate those points into one of the other existing Nov reservations?
Yes. You just modify other reservation after doing your cancelation. The points will be used in this order: holding, banked, borrowed, transferred, current allotment.
Lastly, I think there was something about an April or May date where one of the temporary rules was being discontinued. Would that impact this decision at all in terms of timing
DVC is currently suspending all holding penalties for late cancelations. That courtesy will go away on April 30 as well.

Wow glad I asked! Will give serious consideration to canceling all or most of that room over the next week!
