Wow. I was very lucky to travel in my youth and this was one of my absolute favorite places. I'm so sad for the these people. Cinque Terre was such a special place.
I've been thinking of adding some time to a future trip and doing the Cinque-Terre area. I can only hope that threy will be able to rebuild those hard hit areas.
3 of the villages only sustained minor damage (Manarola, Corniglia and Riomaggiore). It was the towns of Monterosso and Vernazza that sustained the serious damage, especially Vernazza. Roads are washed out and the trainlines are blocked. The entire first floor of the buildings along Vernazza's main road are buried under rocks, mud and debris. I really hope Monterosso and Vernazza can recover from this.
Here's a link to some photos of the devastation in Vernazza, along with some before and after pictures.
