Has anyone ever made such a thing before??

The cake would be for my friend's 30th birthday so I'm debating doing a cake that's similar to the design of the horrendous "birthday cake castle" but with "30" on the front instead of "25".

I have a problem in that this friend hates normal sponge cake so I'm having to make it out of chocolate sponge then cover the entire thing in grey/blue butter icing. The turrets will be upturned ice cream cones.

Has anyone ever made one before and if so can they offer any advice on building such a thing, making it hold together etc? We may have to transport it in the car :earseek: and if so I'm planning on baking the pieces, transporting them individually then icing and putting it together when we're at his mum's house.

Any advice appreciated!

Because you will be transporting the cake, I would probably put it together at the final destination. Buttercream icing is great, but you never know with the weather or traffic if it'll hold together.

If you are in the habit of baking alot.. I would recommend the Wilton Tier holder. it holds three tiers and you can put the cones on the top tier.
You can go to Wilton.com and pose your question, they are good about answering right away!
Good Luck.

I love the one at the Better Homes and Garden link! That's my favorite!

A little off topic, but last summer my Mom made a "pirate's treasure chest" cake for us while we were at the cabins at FW. She used the chocolate coins and chocolate "rocks" to fill it with. It was so cute!

Good luck your Castle cake! Let us know how it goes.

It may be a good idea to put some wooden dowels into the cake when it's stacked together. Wedding cakes are constructed this way in order to hold them up and not collapse with the weight.

Wilton sells the dowels as do many cake supply stores. Cut them to fit the cake layers. Wilton gives good instructions on how to do it and where the dowels should be placed.

An alternative to the castle cake is to make a castle shaped piece to place onto a base cake. That's what I did for a Bridal Shower. I made a white chocolate castle in a shaped cake pan. I attached a few dowels to the back of the castle so that it could be placed standing up onto the cake.

Thanks guys, the wooden dowell idea is great, I've got some wooden skewers so i could use them to hold it all together. The plan is to make a base and put cylinders on their ends on top of it.

I have two Disney party books. Both have castle cakes if I remember correctly. If you are still trying to decide how to do this, let me know. I could scan a couple of pictures for you. I made one for my DD's birthday about 10 years ago and it turned out cute. But it wasn't Cindy's castle. It was a Beauty and the Beast party.

How nice of you to undertake such a task for your friend's birthday. She will love it!
