Chocolate Milk...

I will first say this.. I LOVE Chocolate Milk!!!

But, I can not stand to make chocolate milk at home, because it never tastes the same to me as the premade stuff you can buy..

I was in the grocery store and I saw that the premade chocolate milk costs alot more then regular milk.. but I bought it anyway.. just because I know if I buy the milk and add any powder or syrup it will not taste the same.. That as it settles you have to constantly stir it up before you sip it.. If you use a powder you will get little clumpies flosting on the top and if you use a syrup you get a big ole hunk of it on the bottom of the glass..



soooooooooooo......... Do you buy Chocolate milk premade or do you buy Regular milk and make it yourself?? and Why???

If you get the Nestle Quik powder and add DOUBLE the amount suggested, it tastes just like the premade stuff! Of course, if you're using that much of the powder it may cost as much as the premade, I don't know...

I don't like the way you get those little clumpy blobs of the powder that sits on the top layer of the milk though..

I have had real chocolate milk for years, due to diabetes. However, I bought Sweatleaf brand Chocolate flavored Stevia (probably at your health food store), add a squirt to my fat-free milk, and I have great chocolate milk with no sugar, calories or fat.

I prefer to make my own because I only drink skim milk so my chocolate milk has to taste like water. I use Hershey's syrup.

I know it's MUCH healthier to use skim or 2% milk and make your own.
But I can never replicate that flavor either, so when I need my fix, I just buy the premade stuff.

I only buy the premade choc milk and the powder on occasion because of your first sentence.......I LOVE Chocolate Milk! too. Seriously, if chocolate milk and chocolate chip cookies or pastries (Little Debbie) are around.....it's way bad for me. I could live off of chocolate milk. I know what you mean about the clumps, but I don't mind the powder mix, I love it too.

my DS is a chocolate milk snob. Oberweis ready made all the way or organic. If we are out ( which happens a lot as he drinks a ton of it) he fills a glass almost 1/3 on the bottom w/Hersheys syrup, fills the glass almost to the top, THEN sprinles a tablespoon of Ovaltine on the top and stirs. Its like mud. By the time you total the cost of all that, ready made is not that much more, especially if you get it on sale. Chocolate "drink" is a whole 'nother story tho....eeewwwww.

They make skim milk chocolate milk.. I think it was Tuscan.. It was at Stop & Shop... I also saw Soy chocolate..

It's not the same because the pre-made type contains added emulsifiers that give it that silky texture. Carageenan is one of them; it's made from a particular type of seaweed.

we only drink fat free chocolate milk here.. premade. I do have syrup on hand when we do run out of premade which is often.. we go thru over a gallon of milk a day.. I'm not even going to total my costs of milk over year. I could have probably bought a used car for that much.

When I'm in ice cream mode I make it. I often have syrup in the house for the ice cream and I make my own, but no syrup they I buy it.

I recently just jumped back on the chocolate milk train after seeing a homemade recipe on The Pioneer Woman site. I have a glass almost every day.

I actually cannot stand the premade stuff.

We get it from the MILKMAN (yes, you read that right) and it is Soooo good. It is like dessert! Much better than any other. My boys love it, DD not so much. She's a "white milk" gal!

Sometimes if I am feeling frugal I will put it in a pitcher and dilute it with regular milk 'cause it is so rich.

Those of you that drink it a lot, you should make it in a pitcher. I have a pitcher with a plunger type thingie in it that will stir it up before you pour (almost like a coffee press).

You need to get a Moo Mixer My son had it and it's fun and works well. It spins like a mix and it has a cup attached to it.
