Childhood memory relived-which restaurant is still a top pick?

We all had our fave place to eat at disney when we were kids, I want to know what place is still as good as an adult?

I have been to disney 15 times, 14 of those were family vacations, and when I took the 15th (my honeymoon) I wanted to go back and re-try all those things that made the trips special, including the restaurants...

I want to know from all of you, which restaurants have stood the test of time and still come out as top picks for your and your family?
 
When I was a kid, all the restaurants at WDW sucked badly. ;)

Seriously, the first dining experience that I remember being excellent was Narcoosee, in October 1994.

The point is that, in my experience, no restaurant (not just at WDW, but practically anywhere) "stands the test of time". Because they're run by humans, rather than machines, they all have ups and down over time, and more significantly, often are reborn as new restaurants, often with the same name, sometimes to positive effect, sometimes to negative effect. I think slaving ourselves to certain "top picks" because of past experiences is a negative thing - it sub-optimizes the quality of our vacation experiences. Rather, especially for folks who return to WDW over and over again, we are best served by being open-minded, and open-eyed to reviews and indications that perhaps there is a new restaurants (or an old restaurant, reborn) that should be our top pick now, and perhaps our former favorite is not quite worth the risk of another visit due to how it has changed.

We also had dinner at Artist Point that 1994 trip, but we both ordered beef, which Artist Point always had a bit of a problem with imho, so didn't consider that a great dining experience. However, the desserts were so good that, along with what we learned from other folks visiting the restaurant and posting their reviews, we did go back on subsequent trips, during which we enjoyed (first) excellent seafood entrées and (then later) excellent vegetarian entrées. Though only dinner was notable in that first visit to Artist Point, every trip to Artist Point since has been thoroughly enjoyable. Only Jiko has been great on every visit to the restaurant, but since it is a decade younger, we haven't had as many experiences there. Those two restaurants are the ones that, if we closed our minds to new experiences and/or to the chances that either restaurant could change over time, we'd go back to every visit. Instead, we do keep our minds, eyes and ears open, re-visit these restaurants some of the time, but not all of the time, because we do try other restaurants that other folks, who's reviews we trust, indicate are worthy of consideration as well.
 
Hi bicker thanks for your opinions! I agree that people should read reviews and be open to new things when booking reservations...

I am just wondering what places still make you as happy as whe you were a kid, what restaurants still make the disney experience even better?

For me the place that stands the test of time is Crystal Palace, its such a beautiful place and the food has always been great!
 

As a kids I dont remember where we ate to well.

When I really think about it I vaguely remember always taking monorail to Poly to eat but where I dont remember except ONCE at the luau.

I also vaguely remember the Diamond Horse Shoe Salooon but I dont remember the food, I remember part of the show.

As a teen I remember Les Chefs de France, I remember some of the food here, I had the onion soup, potatos augrautin and I remember being grossed out b/c my dad got escargot! I also remember my dad embarressing me and the friend I brought b/c he kept doing his Michael Jackson impression in the restaurant! LOL

I lost my dad in 99 and hadnt thought of that memory so THANKS so much for that! Ill be smiling all day!
 
A lot of the restaurants I ate as a child have changed - a lot of them have had their names changed and their menus changed.

The ones that at least somewhat remain the same are Coral Reef, Brown Derby, and V&A's. Oh, and 50's Primetime Cafe.

I clearly remember eating at CRT when it was King Stephan's, Ohana when it was Minnie's Menehune breakfast on the Papeete Bay Verandah, Sunshine Seasons when it was the Farmer's Market, and Fulton's when it was The Empress Lily.

Coral Reef is still 'good enough' for the nostalgia factor. It was a restaurant I ate at with my mom because my dad didn't like seafood so we didn't have it often. I booked it a few times for our trips in the past year, mostly because of the memories rather than the food. (The service can be hit or miss, but the food is still yummy. I think the same can be said of the Brown Derby, too.)
 
We would eat warm sandwiches that my mother made at my grandma's house in Brooksville (where we would stay) before we went to the park. Not good memories of fine dining.

But I guess that is what we had to do to afford a day at Disney, so I shouldn't complain!:rolleyes:
 
The test of time for me goes all the way back to 1975. And many of the restaurants I liked are now gone.

But V&A, Citricos and Flying Fish have stood the test. California Grill also.

And some new favorites (Shula's, Blue Zoo).
