child sick...leave in 3 days...now what??!!

I believe it was a Dr. Murphy, who also authored Murphy's Law.

Glad to hear OP's child has been cleared to cruise and that the symptoms seem to be getting better.

My niece was somewhat under the weather during an extended family cruise on the Wonder--she did enjoy it though, as it wasn't too major and no one else caught anything from her. So even at less than 100%, a DCL cruise can be enjoyed.

Sorry to read about the experience HooKooDooKu had. Hope you switched ENT's after that episode.

And about the question, what if the cruise line prevented you from getting on based upon the boarding questionnaire, well, I may not play a lawyer on TV, but I am sitting at my law office right now, and that ought to be good enough for a travel insurance claim, especially if your travel insurance is the policy sold through DCL.

Does he have asthma? I am surprised that your doctor gave him antibiotics. Antibiotics should be used for infection only. If you use antibiotics when you do not have an infection, the medicine might not work right in the future when he does get sick. I am not trying to be a know it all. It is just that my daughter has had numerous ear infections and strep throats (too many to count) and the doctor will never give her meds until the test says positive for strep throat. When we went on the Disney cruise last December my son just got over pnemonia. I told the agent and they(Disney) said it was fine for him to board. I would go if I were you, so many children have fevers in the summer that cant be explained. By the time you get on Im sure he will be fine. Have a great cruise if you go

Sorry I don't have time to respond to all of the PM's I've received about the hand gel, but a very close family friend (actually my Dr. & neighbour) died the other night after a very short struggle with cancer, so I spent last night at funeral home - not much time to visit the DIS board as I have more important things to do at the moment.

Here is the info:

Invisi-Guard - 1 (248) 374-9900 (W.H.I.C.)

1 2oz. bottle of Antimicrobial Hand Gel
1 2oz. bottle of Hand Protectant Lotion (invisible glove that lasts 4 hours - waterproof)

I purchased this through a Dr. who gets it from our local health unit. It is awesome as it's safe for kids, nonstaining & unscented. We really like it! Good luck to all finding it in your area.

To the OP, hope all is well with your son. Your dr. visit is exactly what I expected would happen - doc doesn't know what is wrong with your son, so prescribed antibiotics which will do nothing if virus or cold, but will do something if some other infection - we've been through this many times. Also, being cleared by doc only means that you can go on trip, but doesn't mean your son is going to be feeling well since no one knows what he's come down with. Good luck and for the sake of him, as well as the other people onboard, watch him carefully.

Thank you Tiger for your response in a difficult time. My sympathies to you and your family friend.

I'll be thinking of you today :grouphug:

Only one person checks in your whole party. You say that your son does not act sick, they will not even notice! Just keep him on the antibiotic and it will be fine! I take blood pressure medicine and I did not report that. Just go and have a good time and don't stress. There are not doctors standing and watching you that I know of. Have fun! I am envious! I wanna go again!!!

Great news...!!!! Now, go and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.... :earsboy:

rsjj -- so glad to hear you DS is better! my heart and stress level go out to you, i have lived a few days on those pins and needles and it's no fun. i had to say kudos to you for being proactive, asking for help and most of all seeking a professionals advice. i agree with the antiobiotics not really helping a cold, but if there is any chances of it brewing into a sinus/ear infection you'll be covered.

obviously i'm not a professional medical person, well I could take your chest x-ray legally but i wouldn't be able to do a thing with it :) but as a mother of a child with a chronic illness i just had to put in my .02.

we cruised the Wonder in '03 -- i'm a hand-washing natzi among my family and carried hand santizier all the time. my DD always used the gel before and after going in the kids club; yet our final night she awoke during the night and vomited several, probably 6 times, before we disembarked. I thought she was seasick, even called and demanded someone please bring her crackers and ginger ale. Room service, though closed, did bring her some and the words first out of the servers mouth was "M'am you do realize we are already in port?" My DD continued and vomitted twice in the towncar on the way to MCO, once in the airport and once on the plane on the way home. Back ih ohio I'm calling her rhuematologist in the car on the way home b/c she's now vomiting bile. Rest assured it was a virus.

you could've met my DD or another child with the same immune-system compromising illness and you would never know it. She walks, run, plays, sings, dances, jokes, just like any other child. But her lower immunity makes her prone to virus and infections. Did someone send their child to the club during that cruise knowing they had a stomach virus? i'll never know, but please please consider chronic illnesses in children. Isn't DCL a Make-A-Wish vacation for children? that alone speaks volumes for the weight of exposing a known CONTAGIOUS child.

please don't flame me, I know viruses are out there, most of the time we are contagious before we are symptomatic and therefore can't prevent the spread. i'm just trying to educate and make everyone aware of the minority of those chidren who rely on other parents to keep known germs away from the public.

i buy trip insurance, i'll be devestated if we have to cancel b/c one of us is ill; but after traveling home with a vomiting child -- that's not a day i'd like to repeat!

oh yea, i know this is long but two more things

her rhuematologist always tells me it's not a fever unless it's 101 degrees

and, i recently learned how soap works in handwashing. we all know the antiobiotic killer in soap does nothing for viruses. Soap works by actually lifting the germs off your sking and then the water rinses it away. That's why its so important to scrub long enough and rinse long enough - for the most effective handwashing.

Have a great time!

I know several children came home from our 7 night cruise, and were diagnosed with Strep within hours to 2 days of disembarking. DCL does there best to keep the rooms and club/lab clean, but germs spread. Just a general plea to all cruisers, if your child is contagious (this includes children who have had a fever within the past 24 hours), please keep them away from other children. As ohMom said, you never know who you may be exposing germs to.

Also, to rsjj, keep a watch on your other family members over the next few days. It is likely (no matter how clean you keep things) that DS may have exposed someone else in your family. It may take a few days for the symptoms to show up. :confused3

Hopefully, everyone will continue to stay well! Have a fun cruise!

You do make a good point that most of us wouldn't think about unless we had a child with an immune deficiency. Thank you for posting that. It does make me stop and think.

I looked online for that Invisi-Guard soap and couldn't find a thing that had to do with cleansers. Anyone else have ideas on where to get it?

Thanks to all who have posted! Many points of view give lots to think about.
