Child finally at 40"- ride trouble??

I remember our trip where we measured our 2nd DD before leaving home and she was barely over 40". Well we were a little nervous on her first measuring and she passed the height test, not by much. Well, she was so proud that every time we approached a ride she would run over to the CM to be measured:rotfl:

I wish I had prepared DD for the possibility that she might not measure up at WDW. She was so excited when she finally measured tall enough at the Dr. office. I checked too, so we likely did not have a mis-measure and that measure was made in bare feet in the afternoon. At WDW, she didn't measure up ever in sandals but then did once we put her in sneakers. We thought maybe the measure stick added height assuming shoes of a certain sole thickness. :confused3 Anyhow, she got on some rides that trip; but not getting on everything was a bummer and would have been easier for her to handle if she had known in advance that she would still miss some.

Remember that we all shrink as the day goes on (ever notice that you have to adjust the seat in the car after work?), so if there are any big deal rides, do them early in the morning's touring plan. And recognize that the very act of riding a bigger ride can cause some shrinkage in the spine, causing a re-ride to be impossible.

Rest and hydration are going to be his friends.

This sound crazy, but it's actually true. You will measure a little taller in the morning than at night. Due to gravity, our spines get compressed. Then as we sleep, our bodies recover.

You know I have a couple pocket tape measures. I'm not going to fight it if they say no but I may just check on this. My husband swears there were a couple that were off last time we went.

They won't let you use your tape measure. It wouldn't matter anyway if yours measured 50 inches and theirs 40, they go by theirs. They are not going to hold up other guests so that you can measure their stick.

Can someone refresh my memory (Been awhile since I had a small child at Disney ;))
Is there a measuring "stand" somewhere at the entrance so we can measure b4 heading to rides just to get used to it a bit?

DS was just 48" and wanted to do the "big rides" at DLR. We practiced with a Tee measuring stick because things had not gone will another time (he crouched under the bar and would not stretch up). I set the bar a teensie bit high (so he would stretch) and we practiced without shoes.

Long story short, we go up to the ride measuring stick at the actual 48" mark, wearing shoes, and he crashed the middle of his forehead right into the sign. Oops! I guess he is over 48" with shoes. DS was fine but the CM nearly had a heart attack.

Moral of the story is that practicing with the tee bar makes a difference but wear shoes and use the right height. We were at WDW last week and he was measured for several attractions. We still laugh together and say "don't crash your forehead into the bar!".

Nope. You can always make one up at home, if you are crafty. :)

Bummer, I just saw a height chart on a Universal site that they have at the front, pretty handy.

I actually made a measuring "box" haha, that DS2 stands in, but he tries to scrunch up so he doesn't touch the top...
I have 40 inches marked on the wall and he is slightly over.
No big deal if he doesn't measure right at Disney, he still has SDMT and all the other fun rides to keep him happy. :thumbsup2

DD has been *just* at 40" with shoes for the last two months. I keep telling her to eat spinach! LOL! Seriously - have just tried to warn her she may not be able to ride some things. I hope she can, but she will be OK and we'll ride swap if not.

I didn't get the impression that the PP expected Disney to allow a child through based on the parent's measuring tape, but that the parent was interested in measuring Disney's sticks to see if they were accurate. The PP specifically said they weren't going to fight the CM.

I can certainly see someone going to guest services or writing to guest services if their child was denied riding based on an inaccurate measuring stick.

I doubt the CM would allow a parent to measure the stick in the first place, in which case this is all moot. I just didn't interpret the PP's post to mean that they would expect the CM to allow a child through because of a measuring tape they brought with them.

I don't think that's what the PP wanted, either, but if the CM's allowed it in their case, they'd have to allow other people to do it, too, and they'd be opening the door for other people who DID want to fight about it.

I didn't think they were going to argue with the CM either. :confused3 I was simply pointing out that:

Disney wouldn't hold up a line of kids to be measured so that an adult could measure the stick.

It doesn't matter what any other form of measurement comes up with. The only official measurement is the one Disney does.

This fascinates me. Most parks will measure the child at the entrance then give them a wristband indicating their height. Why doesn't Disney? That removes error at the ride entry point, which sounds like it's common.

I'm pretty sure they tried at one point but has issues with people measuring a talker kid and giving the band to others that didn't meet the requirement.

Can you imagine Magic Kingdom or Toy Story at Rope Drop if they did this right now?

There would be so much backlash if they were the cause of a hold up or if there was a separate kid entrance.

I'm almost 40 and I still get ID'd sometimes for alcohol. My daughter is 45" and still sometimes gets her height checked. The inconvenience lasts all of about 5 seconds and I hardly classify it as trouble.
