This happened at work on my day off. I WISH I was there!
A family came in, mother and five children, none very young. One in particular was giving the mother a hard time, but not anymore so than other children give their mothers a hard time. At some point they got separated, and the mother made a point of noticing that he wasn't there, made a cursory attempt at trying to find him, and then LEFT HIM AT THE STORE. He's 11 yrs old. The other kids also knew he was still there. There was NO WAY that this women DIDN'T know that she left one of the kids behind.
This poor boy came out to the center of the store near the entrance and just cried. He knew he was left behind and knew that his mother did it on purpose. And he wasn't that big of a problem to begin with.
Anyway, they had her phone number since she bought something at the store and they tried calling her. She acknowledged that she knew he was still there and said she wasn't in any hurry to come get him!!
After about 1 and a half hours, the kid just got up and left!
I found out the next day when I got to work. First, I blew my top about the kid. Then I blew my top at my co-workers for not calling the police. This was obvious abandonment and I worry for this women's other children. I swear, I would have called the police immediately and had the book thrown at her for her deplorable behavior! It makes me so angry that I wasn't there and that my co-workers dropped the ball.
Vent over. Feel free to comment.
