If your child has had the chicken pox shot, can they still get the chicken pox? My DS just came home from school and told me his 2 friends (they are twins) have the chicken pox!
YEP! DD8 had some odd looking bumps that her Pediatrician said were chicken pox even though she was vaccinated.
We were told that if the child gets chicken pox that they usually get a less severe case of it. DD8 had bumps all over and was itchy and cranky but nothing like the severe outbreak that I had as a child (long before the vaccine was available).
I was told by my son's Pediatrician that around 7 years old a booster is recommended for the chicken pox vaccine, otherwise it WILL lose its effectiveness.
My son's 1st grade class is in the middle of an outbreak. So far 4 kids have came down with them. All have had the 1st vaccine, none have had the booster. My son did get his booster in August and so far he hasn't came down with them.
One of the boys in our Scout group got Chicken Pox. He had the shot and had the most horrible case of it. I couldn't believe it got so bad. It made us wonder how bad it would of been if he didn't get the shot.
Yes, but I was told it would be a milder case compared to getting it w/o the shot.
Having as a kid is much better than getting it as an adult though. I didn't get it until I was 26. My brother got it from me and had the worst case, I was in the middle and my DH (fiance at the time) also got it from me but only got a few bumps
Yep, two of mine did. Of course, it was very mild. DS11 didn't even run a fever and DD13 just had about 50 bumps. Compared to the almost 500 DS20 had in the days before the shots, the younger kids had a walk in the park!
My twins had the shot, as did most of their friends. And, lo and behold, at their 2 year old birthday party at our YMCA....a whole bunch of the kids got the chicken pox. My twins had, maybe, 10 pox between them...The worst toddler had 20.
Well, now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that we don't get them! My DS said that 3 boys were out of school today and the teacher told his class that the twins have the chicken pox. Only one twin is in my DS's class. So there could possibly be 3 cases in one class and of course these are the kids my DS plays with.
I never heard about getting a booster shot. My DS is almost 9. Maybe he should have had a booster.
The booster is a fairly new idea. When I took DD for her 8 year check up last year her DR. told me that the schools around here were going to begin requiring it within the year. I went ahead and had them give her the booster right then.
Both of my kids have had the shots too. Neither have contracted Chicken Pox. Funny thing is - I had chicken pox as a kid and when I went back to school for nursing, I needed to prove my immunity to the Pox. WELL, turned out the I was NOT IMMUNE and was required to get the varicella vaccine as an adult to attend school.
Apparently, even if you have an active case of the chicken pox, your immunity eventually fades.
DD had the vaccine and at 6 got the chicken pox with a total of 7 bumps.......DR said she was just as contagious as if she had 700 of them. No school for 1 week over 7 bumps
We do see mild cases of the chicken pox in children who have been previously immunized with the Varicella vaccine. It's really not uncommon to see it. Our office will soon be implementing a booster shot to our vaccine schedule.
