Just getting ready to book airfare for January .. is it silly to be concerned about weather (snow/ice) causing flight delays in January at Chicago / Midway? Our other option is thru Houston. We would have a 1 hour layover ...

I would pick Houston.

We are flying from NJ to LAX in February. I was able to get non-stops, I was worried about layovers in Chicago or Denver. It meant using United vs our usual SW, but peace of mind is worth it (for us).

Normally, I actually like layovers at Midway on the way to the west coast, allows me to stretch my legs, grab a bite (Potbellies!), etc.

We have only flown thru Midway once and loved it (in Sept). I'm pretty sure DH thinks I'm nuts for even considering weather as a factor.

Definitely Houston. My philosophy is to get below the snow belt as soon as possible for my connections to Orlando. Mind you, weather can be a factor anywhere.

I once sat on the tarmac at YEG for 1.5 h waiting for fog to clear off in Houston. Then when we finally got there it took a fairly long time time to fit into the traffic jam of backlogged arrivals and we ended up missing our connection. United was great and had us on the next flight to MCO and sitting together to boot.:)

Between the two, I'd go through Houston. But it's a gamble no matter what. I once had a two hour delay on the tarmac in Atlanta while they deiced all the planes.
