chefs de france french onion soup

I've heard many people rave about this, but was wondering what the soup is actually like? I've seen pictures, and the melted cheese on top makes me drool, but I'm wondering about the actual onions in the soup. Are there lots of onions? are they rubbery? sweet? is it full of onions, or just a little? I like onions, just not sure if I want a bowl full of onions. I'm not sure what to expect...I'd like to try something that I wouldn't normally try, so this sounded like a good beginning

It is sweet kinda, but the top of the soup is a piece of bread and some cheese. Its great --- and I dont even like onions!
