CheezWhiz is not fish food

I read on recent post they were packing CheezWhiz to feed the fish. It's not really good for the fish to feed them at all, but if you are going to PLEASE use a fish food made for tropical fish. Fish should not eat cheese, peas, bread or any other human food. It makes them sick and it pollutes the water. Most dive shops and some fish/pet stores sell tubes of tropical fish food. You can probably buy it online too. It comes in a biodegradable tube wrapper. I recommend putting it in a ziploc to keep it from disintegrating too fast in the water. Just remember to take the baggie with you when you leave.

The fish and future cruisers will appreciate the clean, healthy ocean you've left behind.

Take only pictures - Leave only footprints :D

AMEN!!!!!!!

I wish the cruise industry would put this in their documents!

When you go to the zoo, you are told that the diet of the animals is strictly enforced. Why should it be any different in the wild?!

If you're going to feed them, get the real thing.

Skorkel Bob is a major snorkel sales and rental company in Hawaii. Snorkel Bob could make a lot of money selling fish food. But here's what Snorkel Bob writes at http://www.snorkelbob.com/cgi-local...ips.htm?L+scstore+mfjr6213ff233f23+1031105059 :
<DL><DD>"12. Fish Food is hereby denounced by me, Snorkel Bob, especially the stuff sold by the ton as environmentally correct. It ain't. And also especially LEsueur Peas and stale bread. The plastic wrappers tend to clog my, Snorkel Bob's, ocean, and all that crap constipates my, Snorkel Bob's, little bitty fish buddies."</DD></DL>
How about if we just let the fish eat what they naturally eat instead of feeding them?

GREAT POST.

I agree.......let the fish eat what they normally eat, and let the beautiful water remain beautiful!

And CheezWiz can attract sharks.

'Nuff said.

Plus if the fish associate humans with food... welll... the fish get bigger and bigger. Feeding the fish is also a great way to get fingers bitten. I have often noticed, when swimming the same reef over and over where people have been feeding the fish, the fish rush over to "see" who you are. Hold out your hand and they approach, tuck your hands behind your back, they will not come close to bother you. But they are smart enough to know that if you are just there to watch, they will just watch you, and swim with you or ignore you and go about their business. It is much more interesting to watch a pair of butterfly fish defend their space than watch humans get their fingertips gnawed.

On our cruise last weekend, for the first time ever, I saw someone bring Cheese Whiz, and those fish ATTACKED!!! He was holding his little boy, who was screaming, "Make them go away! Make them go away!" Then the guy started yelling that the fish were biting him, and he showed his family the red marks on his arms. I suspect that a lot of people must be feeding them because hubby brought an underwater camera and he said they were swarming around him, apparently thinking that it was some sort of food dispensing device.
While we're on the subject of things not to do on CC, I also wish that people would NOT remove things, both living and non-living, from the ocean. I saw a guy and his kid bringing out beautiful shells and a live sand dollar, and so many times I've seen people take live star fish. Don't they realize that maybe other people would like to see these things too...they are not in the snorkel area for the enjoyment of just a few greedy people to hog?
Oh well, better get off my soapbox.

When we were in Cozumel snorkeling, people were feeding the fish bread crumbs. I had to get out of the water because of the feeding frenzy going on. I had fish swarming all around me. It really was frightening, even though Hubby was laughing at me. I noticed as we were leaving the park a sign that said it was illegal to feed the fish. I guess no one was reading the sign because a lot of people were doing this.

My kids were horrified to see a rather large crab come out of the water and then look kind of frightened and confused. Kids were gathering around it and some boys started throwing sand at it. It would crawl forward a little and all the kids would scream and so on. Finally, it made it's way back in the water and a group of kids chased after it, until they finally scooped it up in a bucket and brought it back with them. These creatures don't live in your aquarium at home! Many kids try to bring them back as pets and they rarely make it home alive. Anyway, my girls were crying and wanting to save it, etc.. and were scheming to tip over the bucket to set it free, etc... but what can you do if parents just look at it like "boys will be boys" or whatever and think it's amusing?

Yeah, I rate cheese whiz right up there with SPAM !!!!

I guess if they do a study on the fish they will find out there is an epidemic of "High Cholesterol" in the Carribean!!
I can see it now: "Marine Biologists frantic over some sort of overindulgence of cheese by tropical fish". :bounce:
What's next? Happy meals????

Seriously now. People really should try to use common sense. The
environment is messed up enough already. There should be BIG signs posted,etc...:)

Can you imagine getting stopped at Airport Security & having to explain the cheese whiz in your suitcase is for fish!!

I wouldn't give people or fish a "food" that has "whiz" in it's name! ( couldn't resist!)

:)

I'm sorry and I am not trying to be an animal activist here, but I have to put ny 2 cents in:

The ocean is their (the fish) environment and we should respect that. We are there to enjoy ourselves and view things that some people may not normally be able to see in their day to day life. This is what paradise is all about!!

Like another post said: "take only picture - leave only footprints!"
