It seems that Kraft has stopped making the garlic cheese roll (at least it is not in our area anymore). That was how I made my cheese grits. I keep trying to create a similar one using Velveeta or cheddar and garlic powder or salt. Does anyone have a cheese grits recipe that doesn't use the Kraft Roll?
My recipe used to be:
1 cup instant grits
1 stick butter
1 garlic cheese roll
3 eggs beaten in a 1 cup measuring cup and brought up to 1 cup with milk
salt to taste

This has been a HUGE topic of discussion online. There are a LOT of p.o.'d Southerners who are not happy with Kraft Foods these days.

The usual suggestion for substitution is for every 6-ounce package, substitute 6 ounces of Velveeta and 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder. Taste and add another 1/8 teaspoon if needed. That's the simple version.

There is also a more complex version that sounds more like the real thing to me. This is it. You would make a batch and keep it for recipe use:

Garlic Cheese Rolls
11/2 pounds sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1/2 pound processed cheese product such as Velveeta
3 ounces cream cheese
1 teaspoon seasoned salt
Garlic powder to taste
Soften cheeses and mix all together well. Shape into four rolls and wrap well in foil or plastic wrap.

I am checking my grocery tomorrow! I will be so upset if they don't have the garlic cheese roll. I love garlic cheese grits around Christmastime.

No store is going to still have the Kraft garlic cheese roll. Kraft completely stopped making it in January 2008.

I make Paula Deen's recipe for Baked Garlic Cheese Grits. It's fantastic. I didn't use as much cheese as the recipe called for. Also, regular grits are hard to find--I could only find them at Whole Foods.
