Please tell me more about the cheese appetizers - the artisanal or special cheeses. I'm not a fancy diner. Are these cheeses delicious? Best with wine? What are your favorites?

A cheese plate is one of my favorite parts of a meal. For me its about making a perfect bite with the chutneys/honeycomb etc that are on the plate and the crusty breads served with them.

Flying Fish has one of my favorite cheese plates I love the crunchy bread(the correct name escapes me) they serve with it. I have had them at other restaurants but for me this one stands out. I don't always care for all the cheeses on the plate. The cheeses are also different textures, semi soft, hard etc.

They usually provide print an informational sheet that tells about each cheese and the servers have always been more than helpful with wine pairings etc. Its just perfect combinations of flavors that are really pleasing to me.

You should definitely try one!

I also love the cheese plate at Flying Fish. The goat cheese selection that was on there last week was maybe the best cheese I've ever tasted (the cheeses change). Ca Grill has a nice cheese plate. I did one at Jiko the last time we were there. I've had them also at V&A and Bistro de Paris.

I've done wine pairings with them but I prefer to just have still water.

Are you a cheese person? If you are, even in the least, I say go for it, no matter how fancy your palate.

I personally love and adore cheese above all other things. Nothing melts my heart more than a chunk of aged ladysmith or an aged gouda. That being said, even if you don't have experience with different cheeses, there will usually be at least one on the plate that you will recognize or will at least taste familiar. Some may make you hold your nose and turn green with you smell it, but when you taste it it becomes something totally tasty and different.

I suggest doing a wine pairing with the cheese, the two compliment each other perfectly. Mild white cheeses go wonderfully with white, sharper aged cheeses go fabulously with reds.

This was one of my favorite food experiences. I had one at yachtsman steakhouse and the flying fish. Each had about 4-5 different cheeses and each cheese (from different countries ranging mild to sharp) had an accompaniment (not spelling that right). For example, a fruit chutney, some had raisin grapes, honeycombs (that was a cool one). i got them without nuts so there might have been some with. Some you can spread on the cheese I guess or just eat with. Usually a sweet taste with it.
I did not drink with them. But they were delightful and I am trying to figure out how I can get one this trip without going dining there. I wonder if they will do take out for a cheese platter:confused:
