Hi everyone! Just wondering about the cheerleading comps that take place at Disney. I know there were some this week because my local teams competed, so I am hoping there will be another one next spring that I can check out.

Has anyone ever attended these comps? Wondering if you can get the Disney bus to the EPSN Complex, what the crowds are like, etc. Also, how does it affect the hotels? (Because its expensive for teams to travel, I owuld assume they are primarily at the Value resorts).

Thanks!

We did this last year for baseball, but I would assume that it's similar for cheerleading.

We were there during 4th of July and the week after. If you asked any other guests, I would bet they barely noticed us among all the Brazillian tour groups. So, crowd wise, I don't think our groups made an impact.

For our event, our only options were All Star Sports and Carribbean Beach. (Players were not permitted to stay off site. A few parents rented houses and still had to pay for their sons spot in a hotel as part of his package.) Special buses were running pretty much constantly between the ESPN complex and those hotels. It's a very nice complex. There was a basketball tournament going on at the same time, and I would imagine that's the same facility where they have the cheerleading. Our packages came with length of stay ESPN passes so we didn't have to use a plus on our tickets.

The Worlds competition should take place next year the weekend of April 25th and The Summit should be the following weekend.

The packages for WDW cheer comps are usually for the AllStars and occasionally Caribbean Beach. If you want to stay offsite you can buy a commuter package.

The girls don't really get a whole lot of time at the parks.
For the UCA comp in March, Friday night is MK night (I think they get an EMH just for them?) and Sunday night is a celebration party at DHS.

At our gym most families fly down on Thursday and fly home on Monday or Tuesday (depending on whether comp ends Sunday or Monday).

My niece competed in one in March. I was waiting for other people to respond since my info is 2nd hand, but since you haven't gotten many replies, I'll throw it out there anyway.

I think it was an Americheer event. My SIL liked the competition itself. She said it was nice to see teams from other parts of the country/world and the competition itself was well-run. My niece had fun competing. However, she had some issues with the surrounding events that she was less than happy with. She's not sure if these were issues with the competition host, or her cheer gym. They really weren't Disney's fault.

They stayed at the Caribbean Beach Resort. She said that there were other cheer teams staying there, but the place wasn't overrun with cheerleaders or anything. My nephew and BIL went to the parks. They said it was really crowded (spring break) but that they didn't see a lot of cheerleaders. There were, however, apparently a lot of cheerleaders at DTD.

My SIL's complaints included:

-- They had been told that discount park tickets could be purchased for family members at competition check in. There were none. The family member tickets were full price at the gate. (Cheer gym and Americheer played the "blame game" with each other for the misunderstanding.)

-- Athlete's package came with a 3-day park ticket. However, SIL's family was only there for a long weekend (due to school schedule -- it wasn't my niece's spring break) and they were not allowed to go to the parks on competition days I'm not sure if that was a gym rule, or a comp rule, but they were not able to use the tickets during their stay. They could not get a refund for them. They would not let them transfer them to another family member (BIL and nephew went to the parks). They were some kind of ticket that expired after the competition (not from first use) so they couldn't save them for a future trip, and they wouldn't let them add a "no expiration" option. The tickets were wasted.

-- Athlete's package came with a ticket to a private "Victory Party" at DHS, however parents/family members had to pay $40/each to attend. The party was confined to the Tower of Terror/Rock'n'Roller Coaster area (my niece won't ride either of those) and there was very little food. Again, I'm sure these are the features that the competition host paid to have (not Disney's fault), but SIL did not feel like it was a fun time or a good value.

So, apparently the competition itself was fine (even good), but the overall experience was so-so. SIL says she hopes if they ever go back, it's not for the same competition.

My daughters cheered with their school team and we did Americheer.
Our caoch booked is into CBR because All Star Sports was overrun with cheerleaders. Based on how our school handled everything, it seems most of the problems you talk about were not from Americheer, but from the gym. Example -- we could go to the parks on competition day. But yeah, the Victory Party was bad...

There seem to be a lot of different competitions in the spring, sponsored by a variety of cheer organizations. The one I went to, All Star Sports was the hotel and it was cheerleader central. Other than that, the competition didn't seem to affect crowds at the parks.

You don't have to wait till next year. The Summit is this coming weekend. It is a huge and prestigious competition for levels 1 - restricted 5. You had to have to earned a "bid" over the past season in order to be able to compete, just like Worlds this past weekend. And the bids are not that easy to win, especially the paid bids as not all competitions offer Summit bids.

From what I understand, there are 500 teams descending on WDW this weekend, so roughly 10,000 cheerleaders give or take a few thousand. I know a few teams who got paid bids that are not happy as they were guaranteed onsite. However, Allstars is so full that Varsity/Disney had to move some teams offsite.

(Cheer gym and Americheer played the "blame game" with each other for the misunderstanding.)My daughter has cheered numerous times at DW. Disney offers a park hopper for the athletes for a ridiculously low price. I think our last one was around $100. I have never heard of Disney offering the parents a similar discount ticket. It really stinks when your child is performing in Hollywood Studios and you have to buy a 3 day ticket to watch their 2 1/2 minute routine. Our athletes are also not allowed to visit the parks (gym rule) during the competition, so those 3 day tickets get wasted.

We used to do UCA quite a bit, but our parents complained that it was just too expensive to have to buy park hoppers just to watch their children. Most of our teams will be in Orlando for either Worlds or the Summit, so going to Orlando a month earlier for UCA was cost prohibitive. I kind of miss it.

The tickets were wasted. Again, the athlete ticket is ridiculously cheap. So, it is understandable that it is not transferable and that they expire at the end of the competition. They are meant for the athletes to be able to get into the venues in the parks if they are competing there, not for rides and vacations. If your gym does allow you in the parks, bonus to be able to use a 3 day, $100 park hopper.

Not being allowed into the parks during competition time is a gym decision. Some gyms allow the teams to visit the parks on their downtime, some gym hold the philosophy that you are down there for a competition and not a vacation, so downtime needs to be spent on homework (for our gym) and focusing on cheer. Vacation happens before and after.

This was an event producer private party and had nothing to do with Disney. The EP set it up and then like any private party, arranged with Disney the location and the food.

So, apparently the competition itself was fine (even good), but the overall experience was so-so. SIL says she hopes if they ever go back, it's not for the same competition.
Most of what you have written is either the Event Producer or a misunderstanding by the gym (or your SIL.)

Yes. I agree. And I think I stated that multiple times in my post, but the OP was asking about experiences with the comps that are held at Disney and that was her experience with that specific competition. Regarding the "ridiculously cheap" ticket price, I don't think my SIL was given a breakdown (again, not Disney's fault) of prices -- just that the athlete's package costs $__ and includes X,Y, and Z, including a 3 day park ticket. (My niece did not have any performances in parks.)

I think a lot depends on whose sponsoring the competition. Our cheer competition was at Wide World of sports. Same for a friend's daughter's dance competition. Another friend's son's band event was in one of the parks.

Unfortunately, I live a 5 hour plane ride from Disney (I'm in Eastern Canada), so I can't attend the event next weekend. But we are planning a trip to Disney for April next year so I thought it would be fun to go cheer on our local team, if they participate next year. I was a cheerleader for ten years, so even if our team was not competing, I would still love to check out the competition if, for the average spectator, the event lasted just a few hours. (I know that for those competing, and their parents, competition days are MUCH longer than the actual event haha)

Thanks for the advice everyone! My future hubby will be happy to know that he won't have to listen to "Go!Fight!Win!" from a dozen cheer teams practicing outside out room :lmao:
