I am going to Disney Dec 1 - 9. I just read that there is a cheer competition at the Wide World of sports that week. Does this affect crowds? Is there anything I should know about it? Thanks for any help.

It probably will affect the crowds to some degree. It also means that there will be lots of cheerleaders running around. I would avoid the value resorts.

I have heard the same thing. What affect will the cheers have on the park crowds? Are they well behaved?

As a cheer Mom, I can tell you it depends on the gym. So you can bet there will be some teams that run the parks and other teams that are very well behaved. For example, the owner of our gym has very very strict rules for all of his cheerleaders when away at comps (No stunting or tumbling unless at practice, no uniform tops unless competing, no "making a nuciense" of yourself...etc).

I have seen other gyms however where it seems like they have "lost it" lol...Think "Lord of the Flies". ;)

DH and I have been at WDW during this week before. I didn't think it was that bad. The crowds during the day were fine; you did see more of the kids in the parks and on the buses in the evenings. For me, the worst was the same cheer over and over again. They would cheer standing in line for a ride or on the buses; this was not all groups but there were some. You could also tell the ones running amok without supervision. They were being typical girls in a pack, loud, giggling, etc. I would not avoid this week in the future. Of course, I say this but I need to qualify that we were not stayng at a value resort. I've heard that can be pretty terrible when they are there.

Are the cheer competitions held this first week in December every year??? I am thinking about a trip next December (2008) and would like to avoid this week if possible....Thanks for any answers!!!!!

I believe the cheer comps are also held in March (A friend of mine goes the first part of March every year)

Yes, they do and avoiding the values doesn't always help as they often spill over into the mods too. The biggest problems we had was on the buses however more than in the parks. We actually changed the dates of our trip this year to avoid them after the problems they were last year. we were at POFQ last year and some of them were at POR. The bus situation was not good.

There is a lot of discussions regarding this week on the Dis. If you search Pop Warner, you'll get lots of information. There are a LOT of opinions on the subject, that's for sure!

I will give you mine!

That week is our favorite week in Disney. We saw heavier volume at MK. Not terrible, though. We stayed at POP one trip and didn't notice that there were extra kids w/o parents. I understand they stay at the AS's, but overflow goes to POP.

We plan to go that week again for sure! I wouldn't avoid it b/c of it!

OT but lazydazy8 reminded me of it: Does anyone else find that the search function here does not work? I think that's part of the reason that we get so many threads started on the same topics.

Kind of off topic: is there a way to find out if there are other "conventions" going on when you plan to visit? I've been told that that Disney tends to be rather tight lipped about releasing that info. I'm not against any group, I'd just like to know if there will be larger than normal crowds.
