Checking on military service?

Hi,

I don't usually post here, but I figured that if anyone would know the answer to this question, someone here would :) .

Long story short, I would like to find out if a certain person served in the military, and if they saw active duty overseas. Without asking them directly to show me discharge papers, is there any way to do this? Either this person is a pathological liar, and dangerous, or someone else is spreading a terrible rumor, and smearing the other persons reputation. They are both people I care about - it's not going to be happy, either way.

Feel free to PM me.

Thanks so much,

Here's a starting point for information on access to military records by the general public: http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/public/general-public.html

Keep in mind that the simple sounding question of whether or not someobdy "saw active duty overseas" is actually pretty hard. Different people define that different ways. Somebody can claim they saw active duty overseas, and somebody else can say that person didn't, and they both be right in their own minds.

Well, in this instance, someone is claiming to be a soldier who saw action in Iraq - and the other person claims that they were suspicious, and went to a recruiter who told them that the first person washed out of boot camp.

Can, or would, a recruiter tell someone that (someone not even related to the other person?)?
