Checking Car Seat???

We just decided to fly down to WDW instead of driving. It's been awhile since I have flown. I want to take the booster seat for my 3 yo (not for the plane, but the rental car). Can I check it with the other luggage and should I wrap it with bubble Wrap or something? I have 2 booster seats and the one I am taking is rarely used. Has anyone checked a car seat before? We are defintely renting a car because we have ADRs a lot of places and I hate to use the buses with the stroller and there's no changing that.
So ME is out of the question. I know the rental car agencies offer a toddler seat, but we're renting for 10 days so I wanted to avoid the $100 charge (like a whole new seat!). What are your experiences? TIA

This is what we do, and we travel with 4 kid sin carseats/boosters. We bring all the seats in carseat bags. They are rougher and tougher than the bags airlines give you. However, if you dont have a bag, gate check the seat. We rent one of those carts, and push the seats all the way to the gate and ask them to check them. They are loaded on top instead of on the bottom, and insured to come out first.

I would definitely gate check it. Is it a high back booster? I've never used bags for my car seats, personally and they've turned out fine. The reason I would gate check it is, what if they lose your luggage? You can make do without some stuff, but not a car seat! I'm not willing to risk it personally (I've had my luggage lost before), so I have always gate checked my seats with the stroller, even though it's a hassle to have to carry it through the airport.

Here is one that they sell at Target. Online only.

Some of the airlines will bag it for you. I know Delta (Song) does. It's just a clear plastic bag-kinda like a trash bag but a little heavier.

I purchased one on Amazon (Eddie Bauer one) and it had 105 really great reviews and I got it for $20! I haven't flown since somewhere around 1998 or 1999 and I never flew with kids. So I should gate check..not to sound stupid, but does that mean I check the stroller and car seat as I board the plane or when I get up to the podium at the gate and they check my boarding passes? I'll be checking in online (another whole new thing), but I will have other luggage that will need to be checked in as well. Does the stroller and car seat count for carry ons or checked baggage? Thanks for your help!

Oh..forgot..the seat we are taking is one of those convertible seats (5-100lbs) Cosco Alpha Omega Elite. The reviews on Amazon said they have used this seat with the Eddie Bauer bag and there was a ton of room to also put toys, coats, blankets, etc.

Are you talking about a booster with a harness or one without? If it includes a harness I'd suggest using it on the plane. The carseat will be safer there, and your child will probably be more comfortable. If you're talking about one without a harness I'd suggest spending the few dollars to buy a cheap backless one (just as safe and SOOOO much easier to carry around). The backless ones fit in the overhead bin, and eventually you're going to want one anyway for playdates and carpools. I have seen the cheap backless ones for like $12 on sale at Toys R Us.

It's a convertible seat that can be used from 5lbs to 100 lbs (more like 5 lbs to 45lbs though). It looks more like a traditional car seat. It has a harness and can also be used with a lap/shoulder belt. I just got the new booster (also has a harness) on Sunday so I want to leave that at home. I'm sure the seat will be OK. DD would be totally fine not being in the car seat. We're renting a car for 10 days so I don't want to fork out $100 to rent a seat especially since I just spent $120 for a new booster. But if it does get damaged I can go get a backless booster at Toys R Us for cheap. Thanks for the tip! :)

Yes, gate checking means that you take your stroller/car seat through the airport with you and you leave it at the end of the jetway just before you board the plane. It sounds like you will print your boarding pass at home. Then when you get to the airport, you will still have to stand in line to check the regular bags. Sometimes they have special lines for people who have already checked in at home, depends on the airport. Take the stroller/car seat with you through the airport. At the gate, talk to the agent and ask for a special little card to attach to the items that you are gate checking. Then when it's time to board, just take all your stuff with you and leave the stroller/car seat at the end of the gangplank thing (what is that called? you know what I mean I hope.)

Hmmm...I'm not sure if they count towards your bag limit. They wouldn't be considered carry-ons if you are gate checking. But they may count towards your checked bag limit. But I don't think so. At least the stroller. Not sure about the car seat. You can call and ask the airline.

And I did want to say something about the backless boosters. You have a convertible seat with a harness. Which is great. A "booster" means one of the seats that don't use an internal harness and instead use the car's safety belts. Your alpha omega (i think you said) converts into a booster at a later stage, however it's not the best booster out there unfortunately (I have one too). A backless booster is just a little seat that boosts the kid up to use the seatbelt. New studies have shown that they are not as safe as a high back booster seat in side impact crashes. The use of a high back booster will reduce the injury rate compared to a child using only a seat belt by 70%. While those in a backless booster experienced no statistically significant reduction in the reduction of injury risk.

Of course backless boosters are great for travel, car pooling etc. However, they should really only be used with older kids. Current recommendations suggest not moving to any sort of booster (high back or otherwise) until a minimum of 4yo and 40lbs.

I know that's not what your post was about though, so sorry to hijack it. I just wanted to make sure this new information got out there. These are relatively new studies.

definitely gate check it! we checked our infant seat with our other baggage last time we flew and delta lost it! all of our other stuff got there just fine, just no carseat. we had to use a cruddy looking loaner from delta until they found and delivered our seat a couple of days later.

Thank you for the info! I'll defintely gate check it. I'm not that fond of the Alpha Omega Elite either. I AM a fan of the high back boosters though. We just bought an EVenflo high Back Booster and DD and I both love it. I like that it has the 5pt harness (which she still needs..she's 34lbs and will be 3 next month), but can use the should lap belt later. The fit in the Alpha Omeag Elite is getting a little tight. There is NO WAY a child bigger than 50 lbs could fit in that seat and it's advertised for kids up to 100lbs!
