I was thinking of checking a cooler as a one of our check in items at the airport, i thought when i got the rental car i would stop pack it with ice and beverages and just leave it in the trunk, when we get thirsty things will be cold and in the trunk, also for the value resort then no need for a fridge- has anyone done this? There were so many times where i was craving for something cold. Good idea or bad :maleficen

Why not just buy one of those styrofoam coolers when you get there. Then you wouldn't have to worry about bringing it on the plane. They work just as well and then you can just throw it away when you are done with it.

Or how about trying a soft-sided or collapsable cooler?

I'm planning on using a soft-sided cooler as a carry-on bag. It has lots of pockets and really does look more like a piece of small luggage. I'm going to put the kids books, games and a few snacks in it. Then, dump it all out when we get to the room and fill it with ice.

I have seen people check coolers and recover them at the airport before. However, after seeing how they treat some of the luggage, I am not sure how long a cooler would survive. It may just be easier to buy one after arriving since they are fairly cheap now.

My sister uses a cooler on wheels and checks it when they go away. What they usually do is pack it with frozen meats, cheese, juices and duct tapes around it. It has worked good for her. I would suggest either a small one if you don't really need all that much in it, or do a small soft side. We freeze the pouch type juice boxes and use them for icepacks when we do day trips. When they melt, you have juice! These would fit easily in a small soft side and not take up much room.
