Is there any airline that includes checked bags into the price of the tickets? Or if we are a family of 4, does each ticket only pay the price of one bag or is the first ticket bag one, second ticket bag two, etc..? :confused3 I believe last time I flew it was included!!:rotfl:

Southwest allows two checked bags per ticketed customer.

If you have Delta's American Express card, you will get one checked bag for each person on the cardholder's reservation up to 8 (I think it's 8).

Most of the airlines now charge for checked bags and have been doing that for awhile. The charges are in the $25 - $35 range (each way), so it can add $50+ to the price of each ticket. If you pack carefully, sometimes you can pack just carry ons (we did that for a trip to Europe where we just didn't want to be schlepping luggage) or the family can pack such that only one or two checked bags are needed.

Southwest includes two free bags PER TICKET (a family of 4 gets 8 free bags). If you book an Airtran flight through Southwest you get free bags also. JetBlue includes one free bag per ticket. Frontier includes bags for some fare classes.
Most of the major airlines include bags when you use their Credit Card to book the trip, or book a full fare or business or first class ticket.

If you have to pay for checked bags, the price per person is for the first bag checked and then if that same person checks a second bag, he/she pays the price for the second bag.

So if the price is $25 for the first bag and $30 for the second and each of the four people has one checked bag, they each pay $25 for their bag.

Remember to check the airlines limit for weight. Most will charge a lot more if your bag exceeds 50 pounds and some charge if it exceeds a lower amount.

Several airlines have checked bags as part of the ticket.

Frontier has Choice fares that include a checked bag.

American Airlines recently introduced a ticket level that includes a checked bag.

The trick is to determine if the additional cost for the level is offset by all the amenities offered in that tier.

This is in addition to those mentioned (WN (Southwest) and B6 (JetBlue)).

As for the fees themselves, you will want to pay for one checked bag per person instead of multiple bags on one person's ticket. This is because it is cheaper (as Carol points out).
