We're looking to rent a home for upcoming vacation and they are requiring a $250 security deposit. We have the option of paying by check and having it sent back to us upon departure or they will accept a credit card upon arrival. Which do you do?

If you don't trust them with your card number, you probably shouldn't be renting from them.

In any event, as long as you keep an eye on your monthly statements, you can dispute anything that isn't yours, so it's no big worry either way.

If they have a merchant account, they have to take steps to protect your cc information. If they don't, they can loose the ability to take CCs - so it is in their interests to protect your information.

You are more likely to have your CC information swiped paying in a restaurant or other establishment where they take your CC and run it out of your sight.

As previously mentioned, keep an eye on your statements (which we should all do anyway) and report/dispute anything that you did not charge.

It's not that I don't trust him in particular, it's just that I'm hestitant to have my cc #s floating out there. But we've decided that the cc is the way we are going.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Credit card number vs. bank routing and account number on a check. They can do a lot more damage with the routing and account number than they can with the credit card number. You have more protection with the credit card.
