We are flying in at 10:54 a.m. and I know check-in is at 4:00. How likely is it that a room will be ready before that? Also, do they let you store your luggage somewhere while you are waiting for a room.

I find more often, no matter which resort, the rooms are very rarely ready till at least 2PM. You do get lucky sometimes in the slower seasons.
They will hold your luggage for you.
Have fun.
I have had luck with getting a room when I check in most of the time. Out of about 15 trips onsite, I'd say my room has been ready at check in about 12 times. I usually check in late morning. I find that when I stay at a deluxe resort, I usually have to wait for a room. It really depends on the time of year you go, and how booked up the resort is.
If your room is not ready, they will hold your luggage for you.
We checked in at the Poly at around 12:00pm and found they had upgraded us to a Lagoon view room but it would not be ready until 4:00pm. The view was not important to us so we just asked if they had another room that was ready now and we took that room instead. I think if you are willing to take a room in another part of the resort from what you originally requested you might up your chance of getting into a room right away.
I have found just the opposite - that is, we always check-in in the early to mid-morning and I have rarely had to actually wait until check-in time (3:00 pm) to get into my room.
We've been to Disney over 60 times, always stay on property, and always arrive in the a.m. ususally around 10:00. We have stayed at delux, moderate and budget hotels. We have only had to wait for a room twice and both times was at the Contemporary.
Check in when you arrive. If the room is ready, they'll give it to you. If not they will give you a # to call to check and see if it's ready throughout the day ....it defenitly doesn't hurt to let them know you've arrived though as they'll give you a room as soon as it's clean and ready

Only once out of our last 4 trips was our room not ready at our resort when we checked in which is usually by 10am. The one time it wasnt was at CBR in which case we checked our bags and off we went. Its a nice bonus when it is ready so early b/c you can check in, get settled before heading out!
The last two times I went to Disney, I checked in early around 10 am also. Both times the room wasn't ready but I expected that and it good to get all of the check in stuff done so you can drop off your luggage and hit the parks or pool. Most guests don't check out until around 8 or 9 am and it takes time to clean and restock the room. Having cleaned carpet in some hotels, I have learned never to expect a room until 1 pm or so. Check in your luggage and go swiming for a while and relax. That's what I like to do and it seems to work for me.
