HI. Right now I don't plan on going off of Atkins but I was just wondering something for the future. Say for instance, I go on vacation in October and plan on eating a few things that I know aren't ok on Atkins, do I try to stick to low carbs as best that I can for that week or try to eat healthy, low fat, etc and just throw in the few things that I know aren't good on Atkins? Does it make sense to have sausage and eggs for breakfast instead of say cereal in order to stick to low carb even though I know that I may be having a frozen pina colada which is loaded with carbs. Ok, i hope everyone understands what I am saying here. I just want to be sure to do the right thing and try not to gain too much on vacation!!!!
Thanks for any help that you can give me,

Kim

It depends how disciplined you want to be.

The Carbohydrate Addicts book is a different approach to low-carb. They have you eat 2 low carb meals per day and no snacks. Then at your third meal, you can basically eat whatever you want in the space of an hour. This third meal should not be a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, but you should try for some proteins balanced with some carbs, which allows you to enjoy that pina colada.

Why do you have to stop within an hour? According to the book, your body releases insulin to take care of the post-meal rise in blood sugar. At about 90 minutes after the first insulin release, your body checks again to see if more insulin is needed. If you stop eating within the hour, then your body will not release a second large amount of insulin at 90 minutes because your blood sugar should be under control by then.

I will tell you from experience that low carb for breakfast is HARD at Disney unless you're willing to pay a lot. It's hard to find a non-buffet restaurant that serves eggs and then you just can't believe what they charge for 2 scrambled eggs. Since DH and I both eat low carb, we'd get an omelet ($8 - $10) and split it. The other meals are easier. I ended up taking Atkins bars or other low carb meal replacement bars and eating those for breakfast - it was just easier.

The other meals shouldn't be a problem - lots of choices, and they are usually very happy to serve sandwiches without the bun or substitute another veggie for french fries, especially at the sit-down restaurants. The counter service places are a little tougher but you can manage.

Best wishes!
