What is the cheapest means to get music download onto my MP3 without worrying about viruses and without worrying about getting into trouble for illegally downloading?

I don't know about legal.......but I always see tons of kids sitting at the local public library loading up their I pods

They rip the songs to their I-tunes library and up load the songs, I asked for an explanation once.

I don't have an Ipod--I know I am lame; I am still on the fence if I will use it or not

Amazon.com Album sales all the time and lots of free music too.

http://www.gomusicnow.com/

been using this site for years. you can usually get an entire CD for less than $3. Individual songs usually 9 cents.

Example: Taylor Swift's "Fearless" CD is $1.05. That's for the entire CD.

According to their terms of service, all songs are available via agreements with the copyright owners and copyright and allied rights collective management organizations. They are for personal use only.

I second Amazon.com - thousands and thousands of free music downloads.

Thanks for the leads. I will look into them. Amazon does not seem to have anything free in the music that I would want to download (Beatles, Elton John, older Aerosmith, Elvis, etc)

Uh... did you look at the agreement? It doesn't make sense. Do you think for one second that the artists and labels are receiving a penny of the money you spend there? Unless the songs have been released or priced accordingly by the publisher who manages the digital rights to those works, it's a violation of federal copyright laws to download that music. Caveat Emptor.

Because the rights to those songs are owned and the royalties are managed by ASCAP, BMI or SESAC. You cannot legally download those songs from sites that effectively eliminate payment to the copyright owners.

Just because you ignore copyright laws doesn't mean the music industry does.

It is only legal if you live in Russia, and even then it is questionable. Would you really want someone in Russia who is OK with circumventing copyright law having your credit card info? Seems like credit card fraud is within their wheel house.
