I've been price checking Halifax to Orlando flights for the fall and right now, it looks like we would pay about $760 each. At the suggestion of someone on this board, I checked the price from Boston to Orlando and it is only $260!!! So for the 4 of us, we would save $2000 by driving to Boston.

My sister said she doesn't want to drive all that way but thought Bangor wouldn't be too far so I checked that and Bangor to Orlando is only $283! These prices are all in Canadian $$ and include all airport fees and taxes. I can't believe the difference.

Halifax to Bangor is only a 6 -7 hour drive and it's even better for those of you in NB.

There are great prices stateside, for sure! We always drive 3.5 hours to Syracuse instead of flying out of Ottawa, and we save at least $1000-$1400 for the 4 of us.

Aww, Mollygirl... you had me all excited with the thread title! Those are great prices, but I don't want to drive all the way to Bangor! (seems to take me waayy longer than 6 hours... guess I'm a slowpoke driver, or maybe it's just subjective time cause I hate driving long distances).

When, oh when, will we get even a slightly better deal on flights from Halifax? I think the best I've done recently was $564/person, and I only got that because I happened to have insomnia on a night when a seat sale started! The price went down before my eyes, and I grabbed it before it could run away.

*sigh* I remember our October 2004 flights cost us $390 with all the taxes and fees out of Halifax on Air Canada. Last October my inlaws grabbed some Continental Flights for ~$450 all in and now our May 07 flights are with CanJet and feel really lucky to get them for $500 taxes in direct, but Bangor is looking like a good alternative down the road if airfares keep going up and up!

Hi Faye, how do you usually find your flight at Syracuse? I've been checking expedia.ca lately for flights around the last week of June and so far I've come up with around C$370 round trip vs. a flight from Montreal at about $390 (generally though the fares from YOW or YUL are significantly more expensive than from SYR, BUF, Rochester, etc.). I saw a flight for only C$317 the other day from Scranton/Wilkes Barre (another couple of hours or so south of SYR) but it's gone now.

I've also checked out JetBlue.com (from SYR) and AirTran.com (from BUF) and haven't found any extremely good bargains, except for some that leave or arrive at very early/late hours and which don't have assigned seating. Which is probably great for some, but I don't really want to put my kids through that.

Do flights tend to get cheaper as you get closer to the departure date? Or is that more likely to happen for off-season dates than for summertime?

Welcome Josh!

I book directly through JetBlue. They are an amazing airline and if the price goes down after you book you can call them and they will give you a credit towards a future price. I had a $240 credit that I used last year, and then the prices went down TWICE and I now have $200 credit for the next flight.

They do offer specials, often 6 or 8 weeks before the flight. We travelled the 30th of November and I think the prices dropped in Sept for the flight out, and mid Oct for the return flight. We ended up paying $59 one way, and $69 the other. Great prices and they were direct flights also!

Keep an eye on the Transportation sub-board, I think that is where I found out about at least one of the price reductions.

Quick question, Faye. If you end up with a credit that you don't need, can you (i)convince them to credit your CC or (ii)pass the credits to someone else?

I'll have further questions about Syracuse as the trip gets closer! :)

I think they will just hold it as a credit in your JetBlue account. I ended up taking an additional $3000. vacation because I didn't want to lose $240. in credit! :rolleyes1 :lmao:

Hi there...

We're from central Nova Scotia and just returned from our trip. We chose to drive to Boston and fly out of there. The savings was SO worth the drive.

We actually really enjoyed the drive. We left at supper and arrived in Bangor at 1:00 am stopping for supper at 7:00. There was NO traffic, it was such a peaceful drive. Bangor is 7 hours for us and Boston is another 4 from there. On the way down we did it in 2 legs overnighting in Bangor. On the way home we drove straight. By the time we got to our car, on the road and out of Boston it was 5:30 we stopped for supper in Portland and arrived home at 4:30. It took us a little longer to get home because DH was a little tired and wanted to take extra caution driving. All 3 DD's slept like babies and again it was a nice peaceful drive with no traffic. Customs was a breeze!

We found flying out of Bangor to be quite more expensive than Boston and there were no direct flights. The less taking off and landing for me the better so Delta out of Boston direct was the BEST!

Next year we will be driving to Boston again and probably will do the straight drive rather than 2 legs. Weather permitting.

Unless of course some miracle happens and Halifax get cheap flights. I'd much rather drive 45 minutes to the airport than 11 hours but with a family of 5 it's either drive or don't go. My mom and dad pad the same for 2 tickets out of Halifax as we did for 5 out of Boston.

Good luck!!

I'm flying out of Portland for 268$ CANADIAN return at the end of May.

JetBlue.

did you stay anywhere in boston?
did you park the car at the airport and if so was it a nightmare or a breeze getting to the airport?

We stayed at the Comfort Inn Boston and booked through the Park, Sleep and Fly website. We received 1 nights accomodations, 14 nights parking and the best part was they offer a 24 hour shuttle service (FREE). :cool1: It cost us $167 USD.

Our shuttle was ontime to and from the airport and we had no problems at all. It truly was a wonderful experience which is a good thing considering it was our first trip to Florida and we had 3 DD's in tow!

Are the Portland and Bangor flights direct and with who? When do these flights come out (how far in advance)?

Most of the Bangor and Portland flights have a change at a more central hub.

I have a 45 minute layover at JFK both ways. I'm ok with that.

The flight from Bangor to Orlando had one stopover in Newark. I looked this week for flights at the end of September. I don't think I'm allowed to post the site here that i used but it's one of thoses sites that gets quotes from all the airlines or hotels or whatever you're looking for and it starts with 'ex'. :thumbsup2

Has anyone flown out of Bangor before? I'm wondering what it will cost to park a car there for the week?

:goodvibes

Flights vary out of Bangor as to where they stop at. Last year I flew out of Bangor to Boston with a 45 minute layover and then on to Orlando.

This year I'm flying from Bangor to Cinnicinati with a 2 hour layover and on to Orlando.

There are park and fly packages. The Super 8 provides free parking if you stay overnight, but after September 1st, 2007 they will charge for parking.

This year we are staying at Days Inn Airport in Bangor. They have a park and fly program. Stay one night and pay $2 a day parking. Your first and last night don't count! Inaddition, we are travelling with two vehichles. They are only charging for one!

I book on the airline websites directly. They are cheaper the earlier you book!
