Someone I know is going to be in New York state for a wedding & wants to spend several days visiting NYC(just an adult couple)

Is there a city/hotel nearby-like new jersey where you take a train or bus in?

Any suggestions?

And I know there is no really cheap way=just hoping to keep cost down:)

I usually find it cheaper to stay in a budget (no bed bugs, not Times Square) hotel in Manhattan vs staying outside of the city. Last summer I stayed at Chelsea Savoy for $135 a night which is walking distance from Penn Station and around the corner from the subway that goes to Statue of Liberty and had a free continental breakfast. We have stayed at Skyline hotel for $135 before - it is near the USS Intrepid and on a busline to the touristy area and has an indoor pool. My friend liked the Riverside Tower Hotel near the Museum of natural history which has a microwave, small fridge, and dishes etc - I haven't been yet but have it booked for an upcoming trip I think it was $120 for two people but I have 4 so it is $130. We mix touristy attractions with visiting family and prefer not being in Times Square area for quieter sleeping.

Check out Jersey City. I think it is a Doubletree that is right next to the ferry that zips you right across the Hudson.

The Marriott EastSide I think usually has decent prices also.

I would try to stay in Midtown because you can waste a lot of time traveling.

Check out Travelzoo.com and sign up for their weekly email. They always have something for NYC.

Hope this helps!

I stayed in a Ramada in New Jersey about 20 miles from NYC.We then took the ferry in.We were on a 2500-3000 mile road trip so the little extra driving was no big deal, also with all the spending we did on the trip we were all about saving as we got the hotel on Hotwire for like $60.

What time of year are they going? We've been able to stay at the Hampton Inn TSQ north near Rock Center for around $160 a night in the middle of winter after X-Mas. When we went right before X-Mas we couldn't afford Manhattan hotel rates. We drove to Jersey City and stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott which is right next door to the PATH station, the train drops you off next to Macys in Herald Square.
