We are moving less than 10 miles to our new house soon and are looking for cheap self moving suggestions. Thinking Pods because I like that we can gradually fill rather than a 1 day rush, but was wondering about other options.

It may not be "cheap" but when I was moving I rented a 10x10 or so self-storage unit. I brought everything over there in a few trips that we did not need right away. Holiday stuff, photos, serving bowls, etc. Once I was settled into the new house I slowly cleared out the storage unit. I ended up renting the unit for 3 months total, but it made a big difference in the moving/unpacking

How long will you have overlap between the two spaces? If you have time I would move all the boxes and small furniture items myself and stack them all in your new house then just hire professional movers to move the heavy furniture. Even if you rent a pod do you have enough labor and expertise to move large pieces of furniture? I know my friends are out of the phase of helping me move.

Did you price Pods yet? We used one more than ten years ago and it only cost a couple hundred dollars to store at our house (not warehouse). My cousin called a couple years ago and she was quoted 3K! I hate paying for moving too, but we have hired movers twice now and I'll never go back to DIY. The company we used could add extra guys with just one truck fee, and hiring four guys worked out to be much cheaper than two guys working longer. Found the local company on Yelp and they were exponentially cheaper than the name brand moving companies, and had fantastic reviews that were well deserved.

It's looking like there will be no overlap time unfortunately. We had unexpected costs with selling our house, so can't afford pro movers anymore.

I did some searches and checked out the local Angie's List. Seemed to be $300-$400 for local move but haven't got an official quote. The review of the local one wasn't favorable so was hoping to find a similar company. We can't put stuff in storage and already have a half the house + packed. I know it will suck to move ourselves, but financially have to. Only other option I am aware of is U-Haul or other truck rentals, but like having a bit of time w/loading with the Pods.

If you have no overlap time and can't afford pro movers, unfortunately you're in a bit of a bind. No real easy answer. Pack up as much as you can before moving day...we've moved a number of times and often the last week before moving we ate off paper plates. Rent a U-Haul and if you don't have friends/family to help (we didn't), hire help. U-Haul has a great reference system where you can hire moving crews who charge FAR less than full service movers. They'll load your truck up, then unload it for you at the new home. We did this when we moved from PHL to ATL. We rented two 26' Uhaul trucks, and hired a two different crews...one in PHL to load, and then one in ATL the next day to help us unload. Literally cost 1/3 of what we would have paid full service moving companies.

We have moved our kids a lot, as well as ourselves as we had a couple of one year temporary assignments. We rent a Uhaul and on their website is a link to moving help that you can pay to load your truck and unload it for you. It has been a godsend for us. We pack our boxes and are ready to go and coordinate the labor to load the truck and unload at the destination. It really is pretty inexpensive and with such a short distance you probably would not have to have them for long. Honestly we have literally moved a two bedroom apartment in 3 hours total with these guys. I just look at the ratings on each link and decide. It really is worth it. We have probably done it 4 or 5 times and its worked great. I think the most we ever paid was $300.

FWIW I prefer the one day option to the POD system. I think I just end up using a room/corner of the house like the POD - but I just pack everything I possibly can as early as possible, and then no matter what the day of the actual move sucks. BUT it gets done one way or the other. We've moved across country 4 times now and it's never easy but it always ends - lol. And I figure I can get through anything if there's an end in sight.

Last week I plan out all the easy meals and stuff and get the schedule down to the bare minimum, wake up stupid early on move day - beg/borrow and plead for help from friends/church - college kids down the street. It's amazing what a free pizza or $20 will get you and it's so nice to have extra people helping load/unload.

Do you have a Two Men and a Truck franchise by you? We have always used them for the heavy items (for in town moves). Very minimal cost, a few hundred dollars. I don't like to enlist help of people as I feel indebted to someone.

PODS are not cheap.

Only option is to rent uhaul and call in favors from friends and family.

I won't move myself again, but if I did...I would arrange 2 crews of friends and family. 1 in the AM and on in the PM. Having a fresh crew would have done wonders for my last move.

We used 2 Men and a Truck for our last 2 moves. It wasn't "cheap" compared to just renting a U-Haul ourselves, but it was under $1000 for them to move all our stuff to the new house.

PODS worked out but I wouldn't consider that cheap...we used them to move and store ~900 miles

How much stuff do you have?

10 miles I would just use a uhual truck.

I called PODS last year to inquire on having my son's stuff picked up from his bio-dad in SC and moved to FL. They wanted over a thousand dollars for one truck load (he ended up driving down and getting the stuff himself). And that price was with my USAA membership discount.

Editing to add in, they also drop the pod off one day, pick up on a different day (his dad would have loaded it). They said they then would take it to a storage facility until they had enough shipments coming to Florida.
