My mother-in-law will be moving to a senior apartment in a couple weeks. She needs to secure renters insurance before she moves in.

We have AmFam for our renters insurance and only pay about $130/yr for way more coverage than she would need. But I did an online estimate for her address in a multi-unit building, with poor credit for $10k coverage and it came out to about $18/mo.

We would like to find it cheaper than that if possible. I'm sure her credit will hurt her. My sis-in-law had to cosign for her to get the apartment. I emailed my DSiL to find out who DMiL has car insurance thru, but not heard back yet.

Anyone know where to find the cheapest renters insurance coverage for people with not so great credit?

Thanks very much for your help!

Hi:) I bought renters insurance through geico.. After my hubby lost his job I had to move back in with my dad and put our stuff in a storage unit.. It cost me about $100/year.. It covers the unit and at the house.. Just no flood coverage/water damage...

with seniors in a senior apartment water damage coverage can be among the most important to carry.

when my late mom moved into a senior apartment I was kind of taken aback at how much her renter's insurance was until I spoke with my insurance agent who said that one of the most common claims they get on these types of policies is for water damage. seems it's not uncommon for the seniors to forget that their new kitchenette has a much smaller sink than they their homes had, so they turn on the faucet (with the plug in or a sponge/washrag in the sink) to start soaking things, and before they know it the sink has overflowed causing damage to their apartment as well as the apartment below them.

def. look to who she has car insurance through-multi policy discounts really help decrease rates.

It will really depend on where you /she lives. Insurance companies can vary greatly from state to state on which one is the most competitive. Definitely start with her car insurance carrier and move on from there.

If she's a member don't forget to check with AARP and AAA. I know my AAA offers a 15% discount on Home, Life and Auto. As PP mentioned it varies by area but you might be able to capture a decent discount.
