I was reading some articles on hillbillyhousewife.com and she RAVES about the cost effectiveness of powdered milk. I was all psyched up to start using it in all my recipes until I got to Wal-Mart and discovered it was just as expensive per serving as fresh milk! :confused3

Anyone know where to get it for cheap?

Try Aldis, but IMHO it is not as good as regular milk at all.
This website has a article about making home made
feminine pads. Just a bit over the top for me.
:scared1::scared1:

We have been using powder milk for a few years. We get a 10 pack of powder for less than $5 from the Wal-Mart here. We use one package to make 1 gallon and noone has ever complained. However it is a matter of taste as to how you like your milk. I should add that no one here drinks milk per say. It is just used in recipes and for cereal etc...

We buy it at Aldi. I don't always serve it, but I keep it on hand so that I don't have to run to the store just for milk. I think it is 7.00 a box and makes 5 gallons, so that works out to $1.40 a gallon. My kids don't complain about it, but they are used to drinking skim on occasion. A little neighbor girl won't drink it. She calls it "baby milk" but she is used to drinking whole milk.

Exactly, that's what I want it for.

We don't have an Aldi here in Alabama:sad2:

I will look at Wal-mart again though. Thanks!

We drink skim milk and the powdered milk we've tried was awful. We used to keep it on hand in case we ran out and couldn't get to a store when we lived in the country (snow storms).

My Mother use to make Powder Milk, but to get by any of us she would put a teaspoon of bottled "real vanilla"[she bought it from the Watkin's saleman] in it, so it didn't have that chalky after taste.

Your Mom was clever.
My Mom put sugar all over liver and onions when we were little and yup.....you guessed it, we gobbled it up!
Did you like it with vanilla? I guess chocolate, cherry or strawberry syrup would do the same thing. (We save marachino cherry juice to flavor milk with and its very good.)

We also buy powder milk from Wal Mart. We try to mix the milk. We use 1/2 powder and half real milk. This is still cheaper and cuts done on the funny taste.

Has anyone tried the hot chocolate recipes calling for powdered milk? Thats what we use powered milk for the most. Its better than store bought, or so my kids say.

We have powdered milk, I use it for a great biscuit recipe. I used it one time when we ran out of milk, and I thought it tasted nasty! My daughter didn't complain though!

A friend of mine started doing powdered milk, based on the hillbillyhousewife sight. Her 12 year old son complained, so she did a taste test, and he couldn't taste the difference.

She tells me, that cold, it tastes just as good.

I have memories of powdered milk though, and just couldn't bring myself to buy it.

My family moved to remote Alaska and we could not get fresh milk. I mixed the most expensive powdered milk and made sure it was ice cold. My hubby drank it and my kids, but I could not chug it down. When ever we would fly out to a bigger town my luggage coming home would be 3 or 4 gallons of milk. I would freeze it for about a week to 10 days and it was okay. It was an experience and I am so glad I can now buy milk anywhere and the kind I like.
