Hi all. I brought a lot of pins to trade, but my son and nephew have blown through them and we still have a couple days and I have ones I'm chasing. No way an ebay order would get to us in time. Is there anywhere near the parks to get a lot for cheap to trade?

Do you have a car with you? If you don't, you'll have to compare the amount you will spend on transportation to the store versus the amount you will save on the pins.

When you were doing pin trading, do you have to have official Disney pins? Can you order pins on Amazon or eBay and use those?

I ordered a cheap lot off of ebay--it was a mixed bag as to whether they were the real, official ones, or knock offs. In some cases, we didn't care if they were knockoffs, the kids kept several anyway--sometimes it's a very minor difference and they still look fine. That's down to personal preference, as long as you're not trying to pass them off online as originals.

As far as trading in the park goes, however, they will accept just about any trade you give them. They don't inspect them or anything, and they know that people are trading fakes and fantasy pins (made by fans or other companies than Disney). So there will be fakes up for grabs as well. You get pretty good at spotting them. For example, the Disney ones tend to be smoother on the surface, like the enamel is completely filled right up to the metal outline, where as the knock offs tend to have a slight dip in the enamel below the outline of silver or gold metal--the coloration tends to be just slightly off, too. Again, for the most part it's a minor difference, and if you really like a pin, you might as well grab it whether it's the real deal or not. And some of the fantasy pins are super high quality and beautiful, so I wouldn't care it wasn't "official." However some of the knockoffs are clearly inferior. But Disney will still take them and trade them in and out, so just keep an eye on the ones you take to make sure you really want them.

I bought mine off ebay. The more you buy, the cheaper the per pin cost. Look around a bit as the prices seem to vary. Definitely getting scrappers - but it's all you need.
I'd suggest buying more than you think you need. As you trade them it's easy to want to keep your new ones. It helps to have a good supply of pins you are ready to trade away.

It is incredibly selfish to purchase scrappers. You are ruining it for everyone else. You are the reason that those of us who are real pin traders can’t find any decent pins on a trading bird anymore.
For the record, when you find a nice, shiny, quality, real pin, that is because someone else purchased *real* pins. You clearly know better - do better.

I agree, because people are too cheap to buy real pins, pin trading as a hobby has completely lost its sparkle. I want to say so much but I wont.

Just know that every time you buy cheap pins from ebay and trade them in the parks, another fairy dies!

Yes! It it totally sucks that I can’t just send my kids to the pin boards to pick out whatever they want to trade - because the board is 98% scrappers. The cast members really should be allowed to reject fakes. And truly, when you knowingly purchase something fake to exchange for something real, I consider that fraudulent behavior, which is a pretty sad thing to model to children - and maybe keep that behavior at home instead of inflicting it on other vacationers.

but people dont see pin trading as an adult thing and don't understand the value of pins and dont understand that its something adults enjoy too.

They just see it as a kids thing and dont want to spend money when the whole reason is that the kids will give away the pins. Disney keep producing more and more real pins, which would be amazing to trade. but until parents stop buying from ebay, its not going to happen.

Are you a local? We will be in the parks in August - we would love to trade! What do you collect?

No I'm not local, but I was in the parks last week. I did do pin trading, but the only pins I put on the boards were pins I got from the boards. Its so frustrating to see multiple boards in both parks with all the same pins because people dont care and just buy the cheap fake pins from ebay.
