Anyone recommend a cheap/Still clean and nice accomodations in Myrtle Beach? We are thinking of going at the beginning of August and I don't want to spend a fortune.

Everytime I price a condo/villa I think I could to Disney for that price... :rotfl:

We just got back yesterday from Myrtle Beach. There are sooooo many hotels there, so you really can spend hours looking through the choices online. We booked through Orbitz, but you can go to TripAdvisor.com and it'll pull up ratings from people who have stayed at the different hotels/condos and also do a search with the three major 'discount' booking sites for the lowest price.

I would stay on the beach if I were you though, a lot of the public parking access areas charge to park there :(. We stayed right across from the beach, on the other side of the road. It wasn't the best hotel we've stayed at but it was cheap and they took pets (we travel with our small dogs).

Oh and don't rule out Surfside Beach area, there are a lot of little shops at that end and one or two nice little amusement parks as well. We didn't go to North Myrtle Beach but it's probably nice too. And Broadway at the Beach is about 10-15 minutes from the beach and it's nice to check out too :)

This is a campground, but also rents camping trailers that are somewhat like what Disney has at Fort Wilderness. Great prices, beachfront and a waterpark.

I think this place is a great value, though definately not upscale accommodations.

We're stayed at both the crown reef and another one just bought by holiday Inn, the crown reef was my favorite.

If you want to rent a house or condo for the week, try one of the realty companies. We use White Realty in North Myrtle Beach. The prices are pretty reasonable. We prefer to stay in North Myrtle or the Surfside/Garden City areas. Myrtle Beach is just too crowded nowadays. :sad2:

Used to live in Myrtle....try the Ocean Dunes or Sand Dunes...very nice beaches...not as crowded as near the Pavillion...they have a Kids Club...and its close to North Myrtle for the Shopping! www.sandsresorts.com they have a bunch of hotels/resorts but these two are next to each other and you can pool hop! :earsgirl: Let me know if you need any more MB info...Lived there 20 years! LOL

Heather Smith, I was looking at the website for that campground. It looks really nice and a lot of fun. Are you able to swim in the ocean there at the campground? Also, I would be tenting and could not find any info specifically about tenting, are you able to tent there? Thanks :goodvibes :cool1:

I agree - the cost of some of the hotels/villas are so high for our family....a trip to WDW would cost the same.

Have a great trip.

IMHO, the properties that run the "best" specials (i.e. the cheapest) are:

1st Choice, Never Disappointed @ Compass Cove - excellent amenities, quiet southern location, rooms from Condos to hotel rooms (we're staying OF effec. 6/29-7/23 @ $1000) We really like this place. :)

2nd Choice, Landmark Resort - good amenities, rooms of average to slightly below average quality. Last time we stayed there were several very large family reunions, even had their own tour buses! Think they were over the stated occupancy levels in their rooms, that strained the use of the pools.

Atlantic Tropical Winds or Captains Quarters North (both owned by the same people). A step below the above two; older, outdated, also in south area.

There is a very nice Days Inn, now part of the Grande Dunes in the Northern section of town (79th Street, N). If you just need an effeciency they run around $100 in August.

Myrtle Beach Live is a great source for finding deals on rooms (look under accommodations section and most of the hotel & condo web sites are listed.

We LUV Myrtle Beach!!!!! We've been going back for almost 30 years, think the 70 miles of beaches are heaven. Have a great time.

We hae stayed at the Crown Reef as well, bu tone of my favorite places to stay is in North Myrtle at Beach Cove.

We vacation in Myrtle Beach every year in April; it is a different type of vacation than disney. It is a place where you can totally relax.

For three years straight we have stayed at Seamist Resorts. Now there are some tricks to this!

It is an older resort; but our rooms have always be clean, clean. We stay in the tides building in a Jr. Family Suite. This room consists of a king bed in a separate room with a door for privacy, a full kitchenette, a pull down double bed, two large tvs. This is an ocean side room, but not an ocean view. We paid in Mid April $105 a night, but it also included free admission to their own small private waterpark (heated) kids love it, free putt putt golf (small course but again kids loved it, 2 free cocktails in the lounge, and then for every night of your stay everyone in your party receives free all you can ride family kingdom amusement park wristbands. The theme park is great , it is a smaller scale park, but very clean and the basic rides are good for the kids, lots of kiddy rides too for little ones. Also you receive in the package price a free breakfast at the Tena's restaurant (excellent buffet). And I believe in the month of August the package includes admission to family kingdoms ocean side water park, it is not open when we go in april. All in all it is an awesome value for 105 an night. We love it...check it out www.seamist.com.

Have fun!

I'd suggest that for a family vacation you stay out of Myrtle Beach itself (stay far, far away from the Ocean Drive area -- oops, I forgot that they re-named it Ocean Boulevard because they didn't like the OD, Overdose Drive jokes -- they don't call this place the Redneck Riviera for no reason). Downtown Myrtle Beach is dirty and dangerous. At this time of year it's full of high school graduates at "Senior Week" (actually weeks since the counties graduate at different times), and June is known as a wild month even for Myrtle. The have Black Biker Week in June too -- that doesn't even sound like it should be a "holiday", but it is.

Instead, focus on North Myrtle, Cherry Grove, Surfside, or Holden beaches. These are much more family oriented. You can rent very nice cabins at Myrtle Beach State Park, which is actually more towards North Myrtle.

Here are a couple websites to give you a feel for what Myrtle is like:

Here's a portion of an article about crime in Myrtle Beach:

2.)Why are crime statistics so high in Myrtle Beach?
Myrtle Beach does have a higher-than-average crime rate due to its location and the large number of transients during the summer season. Therefore, it is NOT a very good comparison based on RELATIVE factors to most US cities, as it's rankings/ratings doe not reflect these factors. Most rating agencies and organizations refuse to adjust or clarify their results, despite the continued objections of local officials. The results are especially skewed by vehicle thefts (typical of a focused, seasonal tourist spot), and assaults/robberies - many of which are the result of naive drug-buying attempts or related to certain youth-oriented clubs (not the teen-oriented ones, but mostly the 20-something crowd) that have been recently closed by the city in a major crackdown in clubs taking responsibility for events that occur on their premises. Also, a significant number of persons seem to claim theft/loss of certain valuables while on vacation here in "questionable" insurance claims. Hard to prove, but the "suspicious" indications are often there.
Bottom line: most persons experiencing crime effects are not the typical tourist, but folks that have engaged in conduct or lax behavior that made them vulnerable. Fairly often, tourists will drop normal safety and security precautions during vacation. Therefore, be sure to lock your vehicle, secure your valuables, be aware of your surroundings, etc as you usually would and any concerns are minimized.
Another question for Mike
Even though Myrtle Beach has the transient population that contributes to the high crime rate, I am surprised to see that the crime rate is almost double what it is in New York City. NY has a lot of tourists and people coming and going, but people have the stereotype that its Crime City.

As I specified above, the crime rate is skewed by certain factors that aren't considered relative to other areas. Very few persons affected by any crime in the area are typical tourists that exercise normal precautions. Certain events - such as concentrated youth-oriented visitation periods - (Spring Break, the "Senior Weeks" from early to mid June, Memorial Day Weekend, etc) tend to contribute greatly to those skewed numbers. It is a relatively low crime area if you remove those periods. However, these rates will most likely fall significantly because of several proactive measures initiated recently by the City of Myrtle Beach (and some other Grand Strand municipalities). Any night club that has repeat unresolved problems will be closed down (4 major ones already have been). Myrtle Beach now has specialized "Night Operations" teams of uniformed and undercover officers that detect, prevent, and react to crime in ALL areas of the city (they've been quite effective; I have frequent contact and perform occasional joint operations with them). Myrtle Beach also purchased new, more mobile and versatile electric cars to replace the previous golf carts used in the Ocean Blvd area. Bicycle patrols have increased in numbers, training, and coverage areas. Motorcycle patrol and police dog units and personnel have almost doubled. North Myrtle Beach does have a lower crime rate, but this is primarily because of less concentration of people, overall activity, and venues that can contribute to crime.

I'm sure you can tell that I'm no fan of Myrtle Beach; however, its neighboring beaches -- particularly North Myrtle -- are quite nice.

I have gone to MB every year since I was young. We have stayed everywhere up and down the coast - even at NC beaches. If you want a relaxing time I would recommend to stay at a local beach (ie. Cherry Grove, Surfside, NMB, etc...). If you want to stay where the action is - I recommend to stay at South MB.

Since my kids are older (14 and 10) they like to be where they can do things, like go karts, minitature golf, shopping. etc. I must say I like these things too!! We usually stay at the Springmaid Resort. This is a resort that used to only be used for Springmaid employees back in the day. Now anyone can stay there. It is the last resort in South MB (as far as I know). It has its own beach and pier. It also has a restaurant (buffet) and miniature golf. They are very affordable and run many specials - check out their website http://www.springmaidbeach.com/index.html.

Have a great time!!!

We go there alot, and for a family of six we have done well with the Days Inn at Surfside Beach, which is nice and family oriented and not right in the middle of the rat race in the middle of Myrtle Beach. Also we stayed at The Reef, which is more towards the south end of Myrtle, but before Surfside, and it was quite nice also. Clean but reasonable. Hope this helps!!!

As an update, today I received several new discount offers when I checked my e-mail. We've moved our trip up a day, switched the Crown Reef Resort (OF Effec) and got the room for 1/2 off!!!! Yahoooo.

Hi we go to MB every year in Feb. for the marathon. We stay at the Grande Shores I think someone mentioned it earlier as the Grande Dunes - and it has great accomidations from an eff on the oceanfront to a 3 bedroom condo right on the ocean. sign up at Mrytlebeachonline.com and they send out emails with discounts so does the grandeshores.com (I think there is an "E" in there) we like it alot and every year the marathon goes right by we just wave at my hubby while he's running then hit the pool! :wave2:
