My oldest DS (9) is going to be Daniel Boone for a school project. Does anyone have any ideas how to create/buy a cheap costume?

I don't sew but I'm very good at pinning and glueing costumes together! If you can find a plain long-sleeved shirt and pants either in brown, tan or khaki, you could hand-sew, glue or pin fringe (made from felt or polar fleece) along the outer seams of the legs, inside seams of the arms, around the hem of the shirt and across the front of the chest. Just add a coonskin cap and your son should look the part. You could try thrift shops for the shirt and pants.

My one ds was Daniel for book character day once. I must admit I had it really easy. I used a stick pony we had, and I had the daniel boone hat we got from the alamo in Texas ( we live in NY now). I had him wear a gold turtle neck of mine, with a indian type vest recycled from the Indian/Pilgrim day and I dont remember about the pants.

If you sew etc. Look into the remanent dept. at walmart, fabric/craft store etc. You dont want to spend a ton of money. I think our local dollar store even had the stick ponys not too long ago. You could buy some fake fur remnant to make a hat or maybe even take an old stuffed animal and recycle it etc. Best of luck.

Depending on how fast you need one - my son got a coonskin cap at Fort Wilderness and I think they also sell them at Magic Kingdom - if you wanted to call disney directly to order one. any basic indian type costume would work for the pants and shirt.

My son had to be Daniel Boone for a school project in 2nd grade. Did I mention that I don't sew much? Anyway, for the pants, I used his old white baseball pants, and then I took and old teddy bear and pretty much gutted him. I turned his head into the coonskin cap, and then with the leftover "pelt" I made well, pelts that I hung from his belt, and then dog even had a squirrel soft toy that I attached as well. It actually turned out really well, and he really did look Daniel Boone-esque!

If you have a Cabela's, they sell kids' coonskin caps in the area with toys. I think they were $9, but don't quote me.

For a shirt under, you can always buy a white button down shirt and soak it in water with tea bags.

The coonskin cap is going to be your expensive item if you can find a used one. I happened to find one at Goodwill for $3 when DS11 had to be a historical figure in 3rd grade. He was going to be George Washington, and while I was looking for those clothes, I found the cap. He changed his mind to Davey Crockett based on that. The ones at WDW are $9, we bought one last August.

I love the idea of gutting a stuffed animal..very creative!

I can sew, so I bought an easy pattern and found some leather looking fabric. I added fringes on everything, didn't finish any edges and it looked great. I think the whole thing including the cap cost me about $20. Which is a lot for a school project!

Use a paper grocery sack for the vest. I remember my whole class making these for Thanksgiving when I was a kid. You can also fold and cut a piece of fleece to make a vest. Fold in half, with the fold at the top cut up the midde to the fold, this will be your front. Cut a half circle at the fold for your head/neck area. Pin, glue or sew the sides under where you want the arm holes to be. Cut fringe on bottom and arms.
