DD's baby is due feb 3. and she's moving to pittsburgh in sept. I'm in richmond, va and trying to figuring out how to get up there. Is there any airline that doesn't charge for changes or that offers open dates?

Funny you should mention it. I traveled PIT-RIC for work about a month ago and am going again next week. Even though they are not far apart, it's not easy to travel between these 2 cities. There are no non-stops. Last month I connected in Charlotte both ways (USAir). Next week I'm connecting in Cincinnati on the way down and JFK on the way back (Delta). Southwest is about the only airline that makes free changes and they don't serve RIC. As far as I know, no airline offers an open ticket. If you are flexible with times, you could probably find something last minute at a reasonable fare.

What about by train? Most likely, given the time you'd need to allow to get to the airport, then wait for your flight, then fly, then change planes, then fly, then get to your daughter's home... the train wouldn't be appreciably, if at all, longer.

Flexible flying IS possible - the passenger simply needs to purchase a (more expensive) refundable fare.
