If you are looking for a cel phone for the US portion of your stay, MetroPCS has a no-commitment option with a $5 (or maybe it's $10) upgrade that allows you unlimited minutes to call to the UK. Total cost with a cheap model phone would be around $100 - $120.

We've got a pair of free Three SIM cards for our phones for the USA when we go. A couple of days before we go you can buy a £15 add-on (NOT top-up, the two are different) which gives you 3000 texts, 300 mins and unlimited data. Couple that with Three's no-extra-cost calling from abroad, which includes the USA, and you're sorted. Just make sure your phone is not locked to any particular network!

This worked a treat for us last year. paying the unlock fee on our EE contract iPhones and getting Three sims for trips worked out ridiculously cheaper than any of the alternatives we explored.

We've all moved over to 3 now. It's a cracking deal - literally £15 for a sim card/add on and you are good to go! Just put my eldest DD on 3 at the weekend - PAYG in prep for our holiday, DH and I are with them anyway - contract.

We have all been with Three for years now. Can use our UK allowances in the US. By far the best network out there for us, always struggled for a signal with others networks, Three is full 5 bars and the data is faster than my wired connection for my business.
