Cheap (but good?) wines?

I don't drink wine, but was tasked with buying 3 bottles for sister in law's bridal shower. I'm supposed to buy a pinot gregio, blush, and pinot noir.

Problem is, I was NOT budgeting for this whatsoever. I didn't even know we were going to have wine there. So, I need to keep it as cheap as possible.

Any suggestions? Like I said, I know nothing about wine, but I think it's $10+ a bottle, right? I really can't spend $30 on this...

Thanks :)

I purchase barefoot wines. The price is reasonable for a larger bottle. It is very decent wine for the price. I use it to drink and cook with.

Berringer makes some decent wines, don't know about their whites though. They are under $10 We always buy reds (merlot, cabernet sauvignon). Hubby does like whites, he likes Chateau St. Michele, reisling--it's a white, sweet though.

Barefoot and Yellowtail are both good budget wines. I can get them here for around $5 a bottle.

Target often has more expensive bottles clearanced.

Two buck chuck at trader joes. Some areas its 1.99 and other 2.99 but its good.

I second the Barefoot and Yellow Tail brands, good for the price, usually a 750ml bottle is 7.99 here, $10 for a larger one.

Two Buck Chuck is very good, we enjoy it (when someone brings it in from a Trader Joe's - there are non here in MS).

The Black Box wine is also very good, it is a box wine but better then the typical you see - those are about $20 and they are equal to 4 bottles of wine.

That's what I was going to suggest :thumbsup2 I think I usually pay $6.99 or $7.99 per bottle. I like the Chardonnay.

Aldi's wines are very reasonable too. I like their merlot but I am not sure about the selection of the particular varietals you were tasked to bring. Yellow tail and Barefoot are good suggestions- and you can usually get a large bottle of white zinfandel for under $7

Pinot Grigio (white) and Pinot Noir (red) are both dry wines while a blush can be dry or lightly sweet. Pinot Noir is made from the same grape as Burgandy so either one may do. Pinot Noir is not nearly as common as other wines so may not find at grocery stores. Places such as Costco, Sams Club or wine stores will have a good selection of most any wine at prices much below other stores.

Trader Joes is a great place for low cost wines if theres one in your area. Another choice would be World Market (owned by Cost Plus). Lots of wines at lower prices.

I also vote for "Two Buck Chuck" (Charles Shaw) although it's more like $4 now at our Trader Joes. My favorite is their Sauvignon Blanc.

I definitely agree, Barefoot and Yellow Tail are great! :thumbsup2

Ok so you're supposed to bring a white (pinot grigio), a white zin (blush) and a red (pinot noir), easy peasy. :) If you have a TJ's get the Charles Shaw, we pay $1.97 per bottle here, other TJ's charge $2.99 but it's definitely a great wine at a great price!! And they have all 3 that I listed and you've been tasked with bringing. :) I also enjoy Barefoot, they are generally around $5 a bottle, they have all three kinds available as well. I think your best bet is to find those 2 brands, inexpensive but still very good! I get my Barefoot at Target. :)

Here is a review of two buck chuck: http://tv.winelibrary.com/2007/04/10/2-buck-vaynerchuk-episode-212/

(Taste is wine is truly subjective. What some people like, other people do not like. Yellowtail had a few good years, my last few bottles haven't been good and we've given up on the brand. I don't drink any pinots or chardonnays though. I tend to drink reds and sweet whites. When I have to do this and buy wines either outside my normal budget range, or outside my normal grape, I go to my local wine store (i.e. store with wine that has a few bottles of liquor) and have them help me pick within my budget. Alice White is another cheaper Australian brand to consider. I've had good wines from them.)

Two buck Chuck has been $3.79 in Ohio for years, still a good price, just had a few glasses last night! I don't know if I'd serve it at a bridal shower though, that's just me though. You certainly can get a decent bottle of wine for less than $10, I think $20-$25 should easily cover 3 bottles.

I really like Chilean wines. I think they are delicious and very reasonably priced. Usually around $6 -$8/ bottle.
