Looking at buying a new laptop. I know very little, last computer I bought was in 2002. I'd like to know a little bit more about what I need to look for.
I am also needing to get a printer. Thanks!

If you are not into gaming or anything hi-tech like that - I'd go with the Dell inexpensive laptop for $650 (XPS M140). Just make sure you get their extended warranty. That warranty is awesome. I dropped a soda (don't ask) in my laptop - they came to my job picked it up, handed me my hard drive and took my laptop. Two days later they returned to my job with a new key boarding system, attached my hard drive and gave me a perfectly working laptop. I love Dell and how they do business.

The Toshiba Satellite A665 impresses reviewers with its excellent multimedia performance, powerful speakers and bright 16-inch display. With the barring of hardcore gaming or video editing, the Toshiba Satellite A66 brings affluence of achievement to the table. Streaming video looks great on the large screen. You also get a host of extra features, including Intel's Wireless Display technology, which lets you wirelessly stream content to a TV.

We purchased new laptops in Feb 2011. We purchased the Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5133 at Office Depot on sale for $329 each.

This has been a great Laptop! It's a little large 15" screen, but Dh needed his for business and internet access and I like to surf, email and shop. Love the full size keyboard and number pad.

It is built very well, solid. The speakers are not that great, but I rarely use speakers. I have headphones and computer speakers if needed.

We are very pleased with our purchase and we were able to get 2 laptops for the price of 1!

I agree with this poster about Toshiba. Check your Sunday paper for all the flyers. Compare each store's prices and find the best deal.

I got my son a Toshiba for around $350 at Walmart and got myself a Compaq a few months ago there for $298. I got 3 year warranties including accidental damage for around $50 each(used a code) through Square Trade. DS uses his for gaming and it has been fine. Both had DVD burners, wireless and plenty of memory and all that.

I think this is the one I got....

No need to spend $600 on a laptop IMHO. Last one I spent $750 on died right after the 1 year warranty ran out.

This one is on sale at office depot til today for $329:thumbsup2
I am off to order one!

I got my Toshiba Satellite in October 2009 for $299. I'm sure the ones they have now are faster, but I love mine!

I don't think you can go wrong.

I'm another Toshiba fan. I've had my laptop since October 2009. For $300, it can't be beat. I got mine at Office Depot.

It works great for internet, Microsoft Office, iTunes, and my online scrapbooking.

I bought a Compaq Presario CQ56 at Walmart in early March. Using it right now. It was on sale for $248. I like it - it has a wide screen, full sized keyboard and it's rather fast. It is a little heavier than my dd's HP laptop that she also bought at Walmart for about $550.

Last 3 we bought have been Toshiba Satellites. It's all my tech person at work buys for herself & teens at home also.

What do you need in a laptop? Powerful desktop replacement? Ultraportable with a long battery life? Cheap and durable for email and web surfing only?

The answer will change the best recommendations.

Just bought a Dell Insperion I5 last week and as usual their prices are keen.Check for coupons or money off vouchers.Bought several fom them and never had any serious problems apart from battery life.
