"Charley" heading for HHI?

According to the National Hurricane Center, the latest projected path of Hurricane Charley -- which already has sustained winds of 75mph (and is strengthening by the hour) shows it passing either right over or just to the east of Hilton Head Island sometime late Friday/early Saturday. Given my counter below, what great timing....

Hurricanes are naturally unpredictable...however, I'd say it's likely that all HH will get from Charley is some rain and some wind. Nothing too threatening. I doubt it will affect your trip (14 days from now, right?) at all. It would have to be a much bigger, more powerful hurricane to sustain winds long enough to cause destruction at HH. Think of Opal back in '96?? when even those of us in Atlanta had hurricane force winds.

FWIW, this morning some hurricane official said they expect the winds to increase to 100-115 mph by landfall (in an interview on the Today show). This is pretty typical of hurricanes that come through the Gulf.

Thanks Weaver - I'm not panicking - yet!

I don't know what it is, but NC and FL sure do get the landfalls a whole lot more than anyone else. Past track record would be a good bet for HHI being safe.

HHI hasn't had a direct hit in over 100 years. However, the path on Mikeymars' map looks like HHI is pretty much right there!

But, the hurricane should lose quite a bit of force as it goes over land in Florida; the storm may pick up a bit again over the water as it goes up the coast, but I doubt it will be too bad when it passes HHI.

We've been to DHHIR twice shortly after major storms -- there were small branches downed, leaves all over the place, but nothing was really damaged -- mostly just cleanup. One time the pool at the beach house had to close for a day or two because of all the sand that had blown in.

I agree -- don't worry about it too much.

ESPECIALLY don't worry about it if you're not going for two more weeks - it'll be long gone by then and probably all cleaned up - you won't even know Charley had been there!

O.K., I'm breathing easier, but the fat lady hasn't sung yet.

Per the latest projected track (below), Charley will stay inland after coming ashore on the west coast of Florida, passing relatively close to HH sometime Saturday morning. The model suggests the top sustained winds at that time could be in the 70mph range. Not horrific, but enough to create a mess (albeit per the point made by Disneyaholic, hopefully one that wouldn't take more than a few days to clean up).

Hmmmm...never thought I'd say this...but I'm glad I won't be in Orlando this weekend!

Anyone else planning in being at HHI next week? We are due in Tueday evening. It looks like the storm will have passed through by then.

:smooth:

Once again NC gets the bad storm, Yesterday, with Bertha hitting FL brought us flooding and tornados. School buses had just left the schools and all had to return. Bummer for the kids. Yes, I know what you are thinking, there were some trailer parks destroyed.

I have been there when some big thunder storms hit, and some of the walkways were under 1 foot of water after the rain stoped. ( I grabed a cart and loaded up the family for a somewhat dry ride) The grounds crew were there the next day fixing the fallen limbs and putting pine needles back.

Checkin' in next weekend. By then, all should be back to normal, thus not worried at all.

Back in '99 we were all ready for our Disney Cruise when Floyd (or was it Hugo  ) hit. We ended up in Cozumel, which is definitely not Paradise. Regardless, we enjoyed our Diseny get-away.

Sending all those in HHI right now (or driving down this weekend) lots of pixie Dust:umbrella: !!!
