Charleston w/ pts. Magnolia Plantation ?

We were able to book Charleston Place (which is coming off of the concierge collection), and we will be spending one overnighter there in a few weeks.

I'm wondering if anyone has done the Magnolia Plantation tour and if so, how much time should I allot for spending there? Is it too much for a day and half visit if we hope to get in a carriage tour and a look at a couple of the houses in the historic district (not far from the hotel)? Would you recommend it?Thanks for any info you can offer.

Been to Magnolia Plantation several times. You can see everything in half a day. You could spend longer here, it's a beautiful place, but half a day will give you plenty of time to tour and wander a bit.

I've also been to Magnolia Plantation and it is about a 3-4 hour issue at best unless you are the type that dwells on every little thing AND you do a picnic lunch. When we exchanged there 2.5 years ago we did a tour of Charleston with a private guide which was fabulous. I think it was around $30 a person plus we did tip extra. We ended up being the only ones along though he usually aims for 2-3 families. He had a lot of information we would not have gotten on a regular tour and a lot of social history one could only relate if you knew it first hand. We also went to places we would not have been allowed otherwise. The 1.5-2 hour tour turned into 4.5 hours. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven't communicated with him since as we haven't been back but I wouldn't hesitate to give out his information or recommend him. We also did a ghost tour which we usually enjoy but this time was fairly lame. We did a Bordello Tour which also had a lot of history and we very much enjoyed including the tales of JFK.
