I am taking a certification test at the College of Charleston this weekend and I am just now getting around to booking a hotel. :) Unfortunately, this isn't a trip I was able to plan and save for so I can't spend more than $80-$100 a night. We don't need any frills - just a clean, comfortable place to sleep and within walking distance of either the testing center (St. Philips St) or night life. If I have to choose between the two, I'd rather be close to the attractions so DH has something to do while I'm gone all morning.

Any help is appreciated! Travel websites aren't helping me out much!

Oh, and if you have any dinner recommendations for Friday and Saturday (or shopping), I'm :earsboy: all ears! LOL

or maybe this one -- :dumbo:

Go to www.sciway.net That's where I found our hotel. We're staying near Patriot's Point in Mount Pleasant, so it's across the bridge from downtown. With AAA, our rate is 76.50 at the Days Inn. I know it won't be super nice, but it's supposed to be clean!

Are you taking the Praxis II this weekend, too?

Thankfully, no. I just have to take mine between now and this time next year (required to intern for a full year). We're taking a little trip for our anniversary.

I got my MEd in Elementary Education at the College of Charleston in 1976!

Francis Marion and the Holiday Inn Calhoun Street are the closest. Call them and see if you can get a state rate since you are a teacher. I find that when you call the hotel directly you usually get a much better rate.

Francis Marion Hotel is across the street and Holiday Inn is about a block away. The Holiday Inn is nicer.

Good luck with the hotel. You will do fine on the Praxis and enjoy Charleston.

For dinner we like a small place on King Street on the left side of the street, King is one way...sorry I don't remember the name. When you walk around look over the menus. It has wonderful salads. You pick the greens and other items you want and the bring it to you. They have many other things, not just the salads.

King Street has wonderful night life!!!!

It's the King Street Grille that I couldn't remember and my son at the Citadel likes for us to take him to the Southend Brewery & Smokehouse when we visit him in Charleston. It is on Bay Street.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Why is it when I call the Mariott and Holiday Inn they ask if if I'm a club member and when I'm not they say they're full. I feel discriminated against. :(

There is a room at the Jasmine House for a little more than I want to pay, but I do love an Inn (we got married at one!) and I think it's a good location. Ack - decisions!!

There is a Best Western King Charles Inn on Meeting St (or is it Market-runs parallel to King), very close to the market. The rooms are decent, ususally well-priced and they have free parking.

King Charles Inn I second this one. Stayed there before and was upgraded to their 1 bedroom apt across the street. Nice. Have fun hopefully the heat will be lower this weekend.

The Red Roof Inn in Charleston is nice. They were recently re-done and I really liked them last time I was there.

Chell, how long would it take us to get from there to the CoC or downtown?

My guess to downtown would be about 10 minutes.

If you want a reasonably priced hotel downtown, try:
Best Western – King Charles Inn (Meeting Street) 843-723-7451
Comfort Inn – Riverview (Bee Street – near hospital) 843-577-2224
Days Inn – (Meeting Street) 843-722-8411
Doubletree – (Church Street, in the market) 843-577-2644

All but the Comfort Inn are within walking distance from the shops and bars. From these hotels, the CofC is certainly within walking distance as well. The Comfort Inn serves mostly people who have family staying at the hospital, but sometimes they have really good rates. You could walk to your test from there, but with the construction going on around it, I wouldn’t recommend it.

If you can’t find something in your price range downtown, Mt. Pleasant is a really nice area.

Also, if you tell me what you are looking for in nightlife/restaurants, I would be happy to offer some suggestions.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn on Calhoun back in the spring. It is easy walking distance to a multitude of historic sites and restaurants and VERY close to the university. Also, the service was outstanding!
