I have an idea! How well do you guys think this rental posting (hypothetical) will work:

Help out a desperate family of 5. Would love to rent our excess and unused DVC points so that I can provide some Holiday joy to my children. Dear son has a medical/dental condition and I need to buy braces. Dear Daughter (4) is very, very active and our Doctor states a bicycle will help her use up some of her energy.

Finally DD(16) is the best kid ever, an honors student and helps her parents at home, but we cannot give her the sweet sixteen she wants (thanks to MTV)

Thus we are asking if anyone wants to rent our 816 points at $13.50 or above.

Thanks for your help!

-Tony

Perfect!!! Except you left out the phrase "once in a lifetime"...holiday, braces, bicycle, sweet-sixteen!!

Perfect!!!!!!!!!! Let's not forget the $4.00 a gallon for gas to go to work to pay the bills to buy the points etc!!!!!!

i must say i agree with you but,

i have rented points two times in the past and am not an owner. recently, i saw someone renting points for $7.50. that really sparked me to look into a last minute trip one i was not planning on or really prepared to spend the norm on. these points were of course sucked up by others so i did put a post up looking for points for the $7.50 i missed. since it gave me the bug which i'm sure you all know. am i to understand that even that post was wrong, looking for points at that price. no sob story, no illness, just a way to get a quick fix of disneyworld which i haven't felt in over two years. only two years some may say. i am truly sorry if i offended anyone at all!!!

I for one don't mind when someone asks for points at a lower than usual rate as long as it is simply a straight forward request and not a sob story that probably isn't true. I don't know how many people will respond to help you out but a simple request shouldn't make anyone upset. My first reaction to a post like that is "good luck buddy" but IF someone is in a situation that they need to rent out points or lose them and is willing to take less than $10 you have a win win situation. I have rented points for $9 - I needed money quickly and they were willing to pay as soon as the confirmation was in their hands. I don't know that I will ever do it again since those of us who have rented for less than "the norm" sometimes hear how wrong that is. Actually I plan to use as many points as I can in the next year so will only have a few extra up for grabs. If someone is just trying to get points at a low rate by telling not so accurate tales or using family health issues and then turns around and resells them at a higher price that is another story. Everyone loves a bargain - that's why I own DVC- but I'm not giving my points away unless it was someone I knew personally and knew that they truly had a situation that waranted it. Each must decide for themselves but none of us want to be thought of as fools for falling for some tale of woe that isn't true.

I have to be honest....it does offend me to read posts like that. I sacrificed a LOT to get my points (like driving a really old car with 100,000 miles on it, and no new one in sight, and buying a less expensive house). For many of us who own DVC....we have "done without" in other areas to have these points for our family. I also waited several years from the time I found out about DVC to actually purchasing it (we just couldn't afford it). As a result, I paid between $85-89 per point for my points. Divided by 38 years, I paid $2.34 per point, per year for my ownership. My maintenance fees are appx $4.50 per point. That comes to $6.84 per point. Then, you have to add to that the interest that I paid for some of my points (we bought some cash, and financed some). So, in many cases, I would be taking a loss to rent at $7.50 per point. I think the assumption on the rent/trade board is that owners are "making out" with rentals....but, that is just not true. At $10 per point, it is renters who are "making out". The benefit of DVC is that after your VERY expensive initial investment, you get what amounts to a "discounted rate" on rooms.....but, that only comes when you make a commitment of a signigicant amount to WDW. Renters get all the benefits for a VERY small amount...they are actually much smarter than owners!!! But, when people get on the boards and ask for "pity" or start telling sob stories, it makes me mad. And, when they go "bargain shopping", writing posts where they "lowball" an owner...it really bugs me because I think that they 1) don't really value what I have and they need, 2) see owners as either suckers or profiteers (neither of which is true), or 3) are scamming and trying to take advantage of people who are either desperately in need of money or are generous souls feeling sorry for them. I also don't think the "rental bar" needs to be lowered any more than it already is. The price of points and maintenance fees keep going up, but points have been rented for $10 or less for over 5 years....owners are getting worse and worse deals each year.

Maybe it is just me, and maybe many others are not bothered by this at all, but when I see someone asking for points at what is obviously 25% less than the "going rate", it makes me want to remember that name and NEVER rent to them because they obviously don't value my DVC as I do. But, justice is usually pretty sweet....usually no one responds to them, either.

I am not mad at you....but, since you asked I just had to be truthful!

If you have expiring points you would like to rent cheap please let me know. I can use them this weekend
Renting points has already turned out to be a GREAT bargain for our trip

So don't take these sob stories personally and don't be fooled by them, but don't consider them dishonest either. They're part of an old-fashioned way of conducting business that goes back thousands of years.

so lieing to people to con them is not dishonest, sorry i cant agree with that

I had no idea any of this went on because I don't rent my points out. But I am glad to be forewarned in the event I ever wanted to. (which will never happen) ;)

I love it when threads come back from the dead.

Well the last post before it was risen from the dead was in Oct of 05..Long Dead....But now that I read through these...I see why Disney changed the transfer rules. A few bad Apples spoiled the cart.

It's funny to see the "resurrected" post, especially as a new member. Others suggested that Disney enforce or add a "one transfer" per year policy on this thread back in September of 2005. Looks like they got their wish!
