So when I check in, I give them my credit card (is it optional, or do I have to give them one?) We are on the Dining Plan, so when we eat, and we order extras (appetizers, alcohol, tips, etc.) can I charge it to my room? If so, does it go on my card, or do I settle up once in a while (or at the end of our stay)? Can we charge anything we purchase in the World to our room? We're from Canada and are trying to decide on Cash, Credit Cards or Traveler Cheques?

Thoughts?

If you give the hotel a credit card number at check-in, you can charge items to your room. If you do not give them a credit card number, then you cannot charge items to the room.

My family always charges the extra items (e.g., non-DDP items, tips, etc.) at meals back to the room.

At the end of the trip, the hotel will give you an itemized bill with all of your charges on it. That amount will then be charged to your card.

This is when the Key To The World Card comes in such handy! Last trip we charged everything to our card and then in the morning when we woke up on our last day there was a detailed list. We didn't have to do anything else, it was just automatically added to our credit card. Very easy and very efficient. Have fun!

At check-in tell them that you want to use your CC to charge to your key card, let them know if you want all cards with room charging or just certain ones. Yes you can charge food souveniers etc to your room and don't forget that if you purchase something at the park and do not want to carry it around you can have it sent to your resort where you can pick it up the next day. Also, if you do not want everything to go onto your CC at checkout then go down the day/night before and make a payment with cash or gift cards etc. I really like it because I get a detailed list of the purchases so that I can look it over before leaving. You can ask for a list anytime during your stay.

I had the same thoughts as you had. I really didn't want to charge up my credit card. I also didn't want to lug a bunch of cash around with me. What I ended up doing was putting extra money into my checking account and using my check card on my key to the world card. I think you are allowed to have up to $500 on your card. You can pay it off at anytime. It worked really well for us. It was so nice to not have to worry about carrying a lot of cash or other credit cards with us.

. . . strictly optional
. . . you can give nothing, and not be able to charge
. . . you can give a credit/debit card
. . . you can just out cash on deposit

we order extras (appetizers, alcohol, tips, etc.) can I charge it to my room?
. . . you betcha
. . . as ling as you have a card or cash on room deposit

If so, does it go on my card, or do I settle up once in a while
. . . you charge to the limit of the room key
. . . $500-Value; $1,000-Mods; $1,500-Deluxe/DVC
. . . when you hit the limit, you charge the credit card
. . . then, you start from zero again
. . . in the event of a cash deposit, you charge only to the cash amount

Can we charge anything we purchase in the World to our room?
. . . yep
. . . the only exception are carts that don't have room key machines

We're from Canada and are trying to decide on Cash, Credit Cards or Traveler Cheques?
. . . any will do
. . . you can put any of these down for charging deposits

Just a heads up:

Also from Canada-

We put a credit card on our room but told them that we wanted to pay cash upon check out. We didn't want to incur the exchange rate from the credit card especially since we had American cash.

Unfortunately the charged us anyways, and then "refunded" the money. However the credit card company uses a different exchange rate for charges vs returns (even on the same day!!!) so we ended up losing money.

This will happen if you forget to go set up the night before checkout. They do a express checkout type of transaction so by the time you are actually checking out the account has already been settled up. So the night before checkout go to the lobby and settle up your account and then it should all be taken care of by your payment method of choice :)

also, one more thing to consider - DF and I had a credit card on our room with charging privilidges on both of our cards - we were on the Dining Plan, but the server charged our meal at Sanaa to our room instead of the dining plan, and DF didn't notice it when he signed the receipt. Totally his fault for not looking, but we usually put charging on one of our cards and use the other to pay for anything we're using the dining plan for, so that it doesn't happen accidentally again.

We had no trouble getting it resolved with WDW by the way, they took care of us and fixed the dining plan credits/refunded the money to our card. Mistakes happen, and like I said, had we checked the recepit it wouldn't have - but just something to keep in mind.

I have never placed a card on my keys so I am not one to answer your question, but I have a question for myself. If I place a card on my key, when will the charged amount be charged to my card? Is it charged at the end of everyday or when I check out?

It's charged when you reach the charge limit for your resort, then resets again. So it's not charged everyday unless you make a lot of charges and reach your limit. If, for example, you are at a mod resort and only charge $600 during your entire stay, then you are charged the night before you leave with express check out. If you want to settle up another way, cash, gift card, etc., just go to the front desk the night before you leave so there is nothing to charge overnight. On the other hand, if you reached $1000 after a few days, the $1000 gets charged to your card that day and opens up charging privilages again.

Value resorts: limit $500
Mod resorts: limit $1000
Dlx resorts: limit $1500
