Charging to Room, What is it categorized as?

When you charge things to your room via magic band, and the hotel runs your credit card, how does the charge show up? As one transaction billed to the hotel? Or multiple transactions for each place you went to?

They will also set a certain limit you can charge up to, I want to say $500, when you reach that they will run your card, and then you are free to keep charging again. You are also free to call the front desk at any time to see how much you have spent so far. It's way too easy to just tap that band so I need a reality check each night...lol

Thanks! I agree about it being too easy to tap the band lol.

I had been saving reward points for our honeymoon, but they have to go to a travel category. Our flights are already taken care of, and we were thinking of renting DVC so I wondered if we charged things via magic band we would be able to use the points. It sounds like it!

The charge limit is based on the level of the resort you are staying at. It was raised in the recent past and I am not certain of the new levels. It used to be $500 Value, $1000 Moderate and $1500 Deluxe. I believe Deluxe is now $2000 but I don't know about the others.

Wish we could get that update in MDE! We love tapping the band lol and have gotten stuck more than once too close to the limit, so we had to call and have them run our card. If we could check our balance online, we could keep on top of it!

We just got back from Aulani and charged everything to the room. It posted to our Capital One Venture card as a lump sum, and we were able to redeem our rewards towards that total. Our rewards also have to be applied to a travel category.

The limit is internal. You don't have to keep checking on it. If you're at a value for example, once you hit $500, the desk will automatically post the charges to your credit card. It then resets and they will post it again when you reach another $500, and so on. You don't have to ask them to post it, it happens automatically and you can keep charging to the room throughout.

Well, I have to disagree based on my experience. We all have charging privileges so if we grab food, or snacks, or something in a gift shop, I may not realize we spent $150 in one day. Then next day if we do a TS meal and only have $100 left on our charging limit, and our bill is $150, then my band gets declined. Then I have to call and have them run my card on the spot so we can charge our meal. Some folks may be meticulous and actually keep all their receipts and know to the penny how much they have charged to the room. Not us - we go on vacation, we spend! We could go to the candy store and spend over $100 without even realizing it lol.

Never heard of this and it has never been my experience. Who did you have to call to have the card ran?

Last time when I stayed at CBR, I had two charges on my credit card on check-out day - one for $1000 (the moderate resort limit at the time), which had posted some time midweek and another for about $300 which was the leftover amount from the time the limit was hit until check-out. All happened automatically.

What resort was it? Was this a one time occurrence for you? Did someone in your group possibly ask for it to be set up that way? They give you charging privileges on your MB so you can spend easily. That's their goal. Making you keep track of spending and request the card be run would be extremely inconvenient and defeat the entire purpose. I think you may have just experienced some kind of glitch, unless a certain resort operates this way that I'm not aware of.

Bump. Can someone please give a final answer to this? I'd like to know if they will automatically run your card at the limit or not. As @nkereina said, having to call and verify that they run your card would defeat the entire purpose of the magic band being so convenient. TIA!

It's always been run automatically for us. Never had to call.

It seems to be a "YMMV" kind of thing, I don't know why. Stayed at Port Orleans Riverside twice, 2014 and 2016, and had different experiences. In 2014 when we hit the $1000 limit, they blocked our bands (I proceeded with freaking out thinking my cc was blocked, but that's another story) and it was fixed by going to the front desk and having them run the card. In 2016 when we hit the $1000 limit, we never even knew, they ran our card and we just kept on spending.

They have charged my credit card automatically when I'm not diligent and don't go to the front desk to pay down my balance with gift cards before it reaches the limit. This has happened at both ASMo and ASMu.

If you are not at your limit yet, but want to charge something that goes over your limit - that's when I have had to manually call and have them charge my card so I could get the charge to go through. Otherwise I couldn't use my charging privileges the rest of that day. I've never had them randomly charge my card unless it's close to or slightly over the limit.

It has happened a few times on a few different trips. Maybe the system is more diligent now and I'm an idiot. Sorry, didn't realize I was the only one who had this experience!

If you run into that again, I would try pushing back on it. Maybe there's some kind of flag on your Disney account or maybe your credit card company had something to do with it. Either way, to my knowledge, it shouldn't be happening so it'd be worth inquiring about if it happens again because it sounds like a hassle to have to worry about that!

You are not alone. It happened to me in June at Aulani, when both my husband and I went to the spa. Our account was near the charging limit (?$1000), and the spa charges would go over the limit. So they had to call the front desk from the spa, ask them to run our card and put our charge limit back to zero, then run the spa charges. I agree that it seems to only have to be done manually if your charges are going to put you substantially over the limit that day. Maybe they run them in the evening normally?

We just got back from Aulani this weekend, and our final bill from room charges was about $1300 (we had spa charges too). Everything posted automatically on my credit card in one lump sum, and we never got declined from room charging. I'm wondering if it has to do with your credit card or credit card company? Perhaps if the resort can't authorize a certain amount, they cap you at the room charging limits? Pure speculation, but there must be a reason this happens to some people and not others.

I think it's time of day. If it's early, and you go over your limit, they flag it. I've used a few different cards from different companies so it's not my cc.

I haven't been there in two years, so maybe it's all better now!
