Just wondering if anyone can recommend any character dining meals for a 5 year old boy at WDW??

We have been to Disneyland when he was 3 and loved the character meals but he is quite mature for 5 and don't know if they will be worthwhile this time around??

thanks!

When she say he's a mature 5, I'm 40 and I love all the character meals. Yikes :lmao:, clearly I am very young at heart .

I haven't been but am going this time, to Crystal Palace which is Pooh Bear and friends. We did Chef Mickeys last time, food was ordinary but great characters, Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy etc.

Also we did 1900 Park Fare which had Mary Poppins, Mad Hatter and Alice, Pooh and Tigger.

I think even a more mature 5 year old will love any of the character meals.

Aside from the ones that Shuttergirl mentioned, Tusker House at AK is good. I thought the breakfast food was better than Chef Mickey and you get to see some of the Fab 5 in safari clothes. I gather that they might be starting character lunches soon?

I also like the character breakfast at Cape May, Beachclub...if you're staying at the Epcot resorts. If not, it might be a bit of a trek to get out to. The Cape May breakfast was much less busy than the ones in the Parks. We got time to really enjoy a leisurely breakfast and enjoy the characters.

I experienced the Crystal Palace characters over dinner. I met another Dis-ser there, so it was 3 adults for dinner. We all thought it was decent and Pooh and his friends were very interactive and quite humourous with us adults.

There is character breakfast over at DHS with the Playhouse Disney characters. I haven't done this one but your DS might be of the age to enjoy the characters? Not sure about the food...I've heard mixed reviews.

We did the 1900 PF and chief mickey. I dont think food was on our minds when we went because it was mainly about he characters. Jake loved the ugly step sisters at 1900 (those girls know how to have fun ), and Tara loved donald at chief mickeys.

I think we have footage on our videos under magic kingdom. The boat ride over to 1900 was great of an evening. Just stunning with all the lights on at night.

yes, the boat ride over to 1900 at GF was fantastic at night. It was an experience in itself. Dont worry about the food so much. I know you are going there to be fed, but its all about the characters. I know you pay a lot of money to go, but if your worried about the meal I think you should just go to a regular restaurant and forget the characters. I dont think there is a character meal that hasn't been shunned.

Right at the end of this is the boat ride and 1900. No footage of the Mickey dinner till DH makes the next video.

My four year old is a bit of an old soul so I know how you feel. Having said that, we'll be doing character meals when we go to Disneyland next year and I'm pretty sure he'll enjoy himself - maybe not as much as his brothers but he'll still have fun.

I haven't been to WDW for ten (!!!:sad2: ) years, but I've done a few character meals.

Chef Mickeys - was loud and the food was ordinary. It might be a bit much if your son is more into quiet meals. I think there are better options, even if meeting Mickey is a big priority.

Ohanas - it's changed a lot since we were there - it use to be Mickey, Minnie and friends and now I think it's Lilo and Stitch, but the food was GREAT :)

Tusker House - I really liked it here. I was feeling a bit 'delicate' after a big night at PI the night before, but the breakfast was delicious and the characters made it around to us (2 adults) twice before we were through.

Crystal Palace - again I found it loud and I really didn't like the food. I'm not a big fan of Pooh. I went with my sister and she's a big Pooh fan. She seemed to enjoy herself.

I've been to the castle breakfast as well which I REALLY enjoyed, but might not be high on your list with your son.

Overall I'm a BIG fan of character meals. I love that you get some interaction with the characters of just you and your family without having to wait in queues. We're planning on doing the Plaza Inn and Storytellers (both which we have done before) at Disneyland next year with our three boys. Sure, they are a bit pricey, but it's not something you do in everyday life is it?

We have done every character meal at WDW (and Disneyland). I kind of have a little addiction to them. I say it's all for my son, but really it's my addiction :rotfl:

There are reviews of most of them in my TR below.

I would say Ohana breakfast is the best. The food is really good, it's not a buffet so you can sit and relax at the table and have the food brought to you. It's served family style. So it's a set menu but it's all you can eat, so if you run out of something you can just order more. The food is placed in the middle of your table and you help yourself. I have pictures in my TR below :thumbsup2
The characters are fabulous too!

Chef Mickeys really is our least favourite. The food is really very average and the character interaction is very rushed.

Crystal Palace isn't bad but to be honest, if he is a mature 5 year old, he may be a bit over the Pooh characters :confused3 If he likes pooh characters then that may be a good meal.

Tusker House is good. The breakfast is yummy, buffet and the character interaction was good. Having Donald, Mickey, Goofy etc in all of their safari gear, makes it a little more boyish. The setting is also rugged so would appeal to a boy of 5.

Garden Grill. Dinner, also served family style. It's not a favourite, bit it's ok. The food is really not good, we are not huge fans of it. Character interaction was great on most visits. Chip and Dale are there and they are funny and really played up to my son, so that might be ok.

Cape May's breakfast is good, the food is delicious and the character interaction has always been good. They used to have chip and dale there but they have moved on now and although we ate there three times last trip, it still was not as fun as when they were there. But it is still up there as one of our favourites.

1900 Park Fare.... Well this could be fun for your DS. Breakfast has the mad hatter and he is a scream! On our trip before last we had probably the most character interaction/fun of any character meal we've had, Mad Hatter was being so loud and when he came to our table my DS took off up to the buffet. He was hiding waiting for Mad Hatter to go past. Mad Hatter asked where my DS was and I said (silly me, LOL) that he was up at the buffet... hiding... he was scared of you. OMG! Was that a mistake! He was bellowing "scared of me... scared of me.... where is he.... what's his name" and then he started off around the restaurant screaming his name, looking for him, it was SO funny! My DS eventually came to the table and Mad Hatter sat down beside him and had a big chat. It was so much fun! They are just so funny and over the top but we went with friends who had daughters, we had not been before with just us and no other girls, so your DS may not be so into the princesses, even though there is a prince.

If you eat at Chefs de France and get the right time, you can see Remy. He comes around the tables on a trolley with a chef. He as a classic. I'm not sure if I have added the photos yet in my TR but if you want to see them let me know and I'll post them for you.

So our preference, with a boy is
1. Ohana breakfast
2. Tusker House
3. Cape May

My son's favourite restaurant is Sci-Fi dine in theatre. He absolutely LOVES sitting in the cars, thinks it's so cool.

Highly agree on this. :thumbsup2 Too many customers compared to characters so the interactions is rushed. 1900 was a smaller place, more quiet, and had heeps more time with the characters compared to chief mickeys.

Thanks so much everyone for your great advice. We willdefinitely check out Ohana and Tusker House as he missed out on seeing Donald Duck when we went to Disneyland in 2010 and was disappointed about that!! Also the Sci-Fi dine sounds excellent.

I secretely would love to do all the character meals but he is already asking to go the skate park instead of to Disneyworld on one of the days we are going there?? :scared1: So would just like to do the meals that i know he will really enjoy.

He has never got into characters like Winny the Pooh etc he did love Handy Manny for a short time but now prefers Nitro Circus...I am sure he will have a great time no matter what though!!

Just a bit off topic - i just read that test track is going to be closed from April to September - how disappointing - we were all looking forward to that ride....

We try to do character meals for breakfast to save a bit of $$$. Our favorites have been Ohana's (Lilo, Stitch, Mickey, Pluto and maybe one more). Great food, great servers, fun atmosphere (my DD is 6 and reluctantly does the parade, but loves it every time). Crystal Palace is also great for Breakfast because you can get in before the park opens. I'm a photo queen, so an empty Main Street USA for Castle pics is priceless!!! We've not done Tusker House but hoping to next November. I've read a lot of good reviews of their buffet. Hope he has a blast, where ever you go!

Chef Mickey and Tusker House are both personal favourites after our first trip to Disney World. Both meals were served buffet style, and the chefs at both were great, as my sister had allergy, and they gave us a 'tour' of the buffet, and showing us the foods to avoid. Both had a really upbeat feel, and a fantastic vibe from the moment you checked in. The characters in each wear themed clothing, chef outfits at Chef Mickey and Safari outfits at Tusker. Chef Mickey is the only place where you can get all the Fab 5 for a character Meal!!:goodvibes

The one at aulani is awesome...:rotfl:

Sorry, just had to add that....:rotfl2:

hey

dont go in their summer months- may, june, july (summer school hols for the USA)
really expensive, crowded and hot......and Aulani will not be too nice at full capacity, the resort pools etc just aren,t big enough for that amount of people..

best time is over xmas thru to about april.....

less crowded, off peak rates and the weather is still around 28 ish...and they offer surfing and paddle boarding..etc
