Character meals at Universal Hotels

We will be staying at Wyndham Bonnet Creek in May and plan to concentrate most of our time at Disney. However, we were hoping to go up to Universal one day to check it out, but we don't want to do the parks. First, is City Walk open to the general public w/o paid admission? Second, are character meals only available to resort or park guests? How are they? Which one would you recommend for a 6, 4, and 3 y/old? What characters are usually there? They love all Dr. Seuss and Shrek characters.

There are no character meals at CityWalk...only IoA and the resort...I can't remember which one. CityWalk charges a parking fee but other than that it's open to anyone. The Spiderman breakfast with some Seuss characters is held at Confisco Grill but that would require you to buy a ticket to enter the park. You can do the breakfast at the hotel but someone else will have to tell you about that since I don't go to the hotels being local.

I read somewhere that you can actually go to guest services outside the main gate and essentially get a 2.5 hour "pass" to go to Mythos or Confisco Grill. Basically, you pay the price of a one-day ticket with your credit card, they give you a ticket to get in, and as long as you come back within the given time, you give them the ticket back and they tear up the credit slip without actually charging you.

I'm not sure how accurate that info is, but it's worth checking on if someone doesn't want to pay for a day at IOA.

BTW, the other character meal is at the Royal Pacific.

I've done that before but it was only for an hour of shopping. It worked just as you said, pay for a full day ticket and get it ripped up on the way out. I didn't even have to pay for parking. That was years ago and I don't know if they still have that policy in effect but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

have only been at RPR character meal. Its in the Islands restaurant, and not sure if its been changed since July, but it was scooby and Shaggy on a Monday Simpsons on a Wed and Shrek and fiona on a Sat[could be friday]. If you phone the resort they will tell you, i think there is some breakfast ones as well, they are all open to everyone wether you are a guest or not.
