So, is all of the food at the character meals just sort of mediocre? This seems to be the impression that I get.

It was the impression I got at H&V and CP.. Now CRT breakfast was great and Id like to try 1900 PF and Cape May breakfast

We've had average food @ Chef Mickey's and Crystal Palace. The food @ 1900 PF and Cape May was good, as was our Tusker House Breakfast.

Ohana breakfast is outstanding! Although its basic breakfast its the best we have ever had! We will always go back every trip

We also pay out of pocket for alll our ts meals....so it really has to be good!

Our food at the Garden Grill in Epcot was really really good. Plus with it being family style all you can eat, you can eat all you want while the charcters come right to you. So far this is my best character eat and greet.

Character meal food is mediocre if you have great expectations. However I don't think it's bad at all and we have had many very enjoyable character buffets. True, some are better than others and none are exempt from their good and bad days, but if you are going to a character meal I think you have to accept that the benefit is mostly in being able to get autographs and photos from several characters without having to line up - and during time which you would have set aside for eating anyway. So from that point of view I think it is absolutely worth it and you can get a good meal while you accomplish it.

I really enjoyed dinner at Garden Grill and Crystal Palace. I'm a picky eater too.....just fyi

Crystal Palace is just average breakfast food. It wasn't bad at all, just it wasn't great.
However, we like Tusker House breakfast was much better. They had more varieties including traditional breakfast.

I really liked CP dinner buffet and liked garden grill.Ohana was the worst we have had. Just shows each to there own.

I haven't been in a while, but I think I remember Crystal Palace being good for character meal as well as CRT.

I've heard good things about Cape May Cafe, 1900 park fare and Tusker house, so we will be doing those on our trip.

In my opinion, yes. Disney definitely realizes that guests don't book these for the food. Of course, all character meals except CRT and Akershus are buffet or all you can eat family style, which means mass-produced food.

I would say its standard breakfast buffet fare. Sometimes a little better. I agree with the PP that you are paying for the character interaction. If you are looking for value this is the wrong place. We did three CB on our last trip. Here is my ranking.

1. 1900 Park Fair
2. Cape May
3. O'hana

This is solely based on food quality.

Been to Crystal Palace and would probably place it ahead of Ohana.

I have never had bad experiences with any character dining food. I would rate it all from an 7 to a 10.

We have been to:

the Luau Dinner show[9] (although not really character dining),

Chef Mickey breakfast [8.5],

Ohana breakfast [8.5],

1900 Park Fare [8],

Cinderellas Royal Table for lunch [10]

Askuhrs [9],

We have booked:

* Akershus (lunch)
* Hollywood and Vine (lunch)
* Chef Mickey (breakfast)
* Spirit of Aloha (obviously dinner)
* Crystal Palace (lunch)

We wanted to go places where our kids would know the characters. That was the big thing for us. They won't know any at 1900... so, we figured one show for us adults (SoA) and then the others all for them. ;)

We'll see how they go, I guess. I'm thinking if I don't go in with high expectations on the food and just look forward to the experience and the interaction, that will put us ahead in how we remember it. :)

As a general rule, yes, the food at character meals is lackluster. Folks come on these boards all the time and ask for help deciding among 1900 Park Fare, Crystal Palace and Chef Mickey's. I think they're indistinguishable, and the same applies to pretty much all the character meals around property.

The breakfast at Tusker House seems to be an exception. I've only been there once, but I was pleasantly surprised. There seemed to be better variety on the buffet, and the food definitely was of higher quality than most of its counterparts.

I haven't heard ANYTHING good about Hollywood and Vine. Just so you know

We like character meals. The food is good. It's not gourmet, but it is good. We love the character meals. Our favorites are, CP, Ohana's, & 1900 Park Fare.

I have from a few people that I know IRL. They said it was okay and the interaction with the characters was excellent. My girls will really want to see the Little Einstein and Oso characters, so really that one's not about the food. It's far more about the characters.

I agree, the food is not bad but dont expect a 5 star meal. But the main reason is the different characters. We do a lot of character meals when we go (were doing 8 out of 14 on our nxt 10day trip this may)

We do it for the characters cuz we have three kids ages 9, 7, & 1.....and we hate standing in long lines in the heat to get pictures so eating at the character meals minimizes that

That's our reasoning, too. Our girls are 8 and 5.
