Character magic band question

I purchased special magic bands for my family's trip. They are a surprise for tomorrow, so I haven't linked them up or anything yet.

I wasn't concerned about anything....but just read somewhere about the specialty character band someone had didn't open their resort room, and they had to go to the front desk to get it set up to open the door...!? Is this typical? Or should our bands just work without taking extra measures? I just want to know what to expect!!

I was worried about this too, but my Figment MB worked perfectly for everything from Magical Express to my room door a couple of weeks ago. I just linked it to my MDE account, I never used the MB I got with the room reservation.

I should say, I asked the CM that checked us in to the resort if I needed to do anything extra to make it work on the room door and she said no. It also worked for Magical Express at the airport before that anyway :)
 

All bands on your MDE should work for everything.

Sometimes glitches happen and those can be fixed.
 
Right, they should work.
Doesn't mean they WILL work.
But, if it doesn't work, just head to the front desk. They can fix it right up.
Thing is, the system used at the resorts to open the room doors is slightly different. They should acknowledge any MB assigned to you in to their data base so it knows you are you but sometimes those things don't sync up perfectly (we are talking Disney IT here)
One option to be extra safe, bring along the band sent to you for the resort stay. Those are less likely to have a glitch and would open your room. Then check each specialty band and make sure they open the door too. Once you do that, you can put away the plain band and use your character bands.
 
I have purchased quite a few of the character and or specialty magic bands so far and haven't had any issues linking them to either MDE or using them for resort access and charging. We have had glitches with the regular MB's on a couple occasions but a trip to the front desk fixed that. That said - we do check each of tgheMB's we are planning to use to be sure we can open the door and charge with them prior to heading to the park. We also carry our park tickets in our wallet just in case and carry a bit of cash and a cc'd just in case.

From what I've seen on here, this can happen with ANY magic band. My FIL's regular MB didn't work half the time we were in the parks. Had to do the iPad thing each time.
 
If the band is linked to your account before checkin. (checkin is when disney assigns your room number to you, not when you physically get there) then it will work as a room key. If you add it after checkin, or purchase a new one at the park, then it will not work as a room key or room purchases (including meal plan) until you have the resort activate it for that. The person selling the bands can only link it for tickets and fastpasses. It's a safety measure that I don't mind. If you don't know, then it's annoying to have to go to front desk or any concierge desk (some resorts have more than front desk, like CBR with the concierge in the food court). If you do know, it's not that much extra time to just pass by the desk for a couple minutes to activate it for resort features.
