Hey everyone,

Quick question:

What have you heard CM saying to guests when a character has to leave for the day/go on a break? I am going for my International College Program interview and I was just wondering about being a Character Attendant.

Any help would be great!:thumbsup2

Usually they say something in character so it really varies. Like, Pooh is gonna go on a honey break. Or Mushu has to go meet with the Emporer. Stuff like that. My advice would be to think about the character and then think about something that would logically fit that character.

In the EPCOT group setting in Future World (with 4 or 5 lined up right in a row), they all went on a break at pretty much the same time to switch out cast members and come back (slightly different than your "average" character greeting where it's simply time for them to leave and go backstage). I thick Mickey/Minnie/Goofy are harder than say, Pooh, as the PP pointed out a good in-character "excuse" for him.

Last year, I am pretty sure I heard things like "Mickey has to go take Pluto for a quick walk." or "Donald got a phone call from Daisy." Something like that.

They usually say something like, "Pooh has to take a break", and they will tell a person that you are the last person to see Pooh, and if other people get in line, they will tell then they wont be able to see Pooh. The characters will walk away from guests if it is there time is up. I was my high school mascot for one game, and quit because I thought I was going to die because it was so hot!!!! I can't imagine being dressed up like that in July.

They told us at Epcot "Belle must return to the castle before dark" and that was the only one I have heard I think.

We were told that Alice had to go to tea.
Thought that was cute.

Is Character Attendant a "standalone" job you can ask for though? I always thought that you need character experience for this so you would have to apply for a character job in order to do the attendant job as well.

My guess is that Disney tells them what to say. But it's always along the lines of Santa needing to go feed the reindeer.

It's something that let's adults know it is time for a break, but doesn't break the "magic" for the kiddos. Nobody says, "Mike is going to pass out if he has to roast in there in this heat for five more minutes!"

When Minnie and Mickey were heading in together. We heard Minnie had made a cheese cake and it was finally chilled so her and Mickey were going to grab a piece and they would be right back.

Daisy had to take a phone call from Minnie. Said they were planning a shopping trip. Comments then started about how Mickey and Donald wouldn't like the credit card bill!

As far as I know it is not a standalone job. Character attendants used to be costumed characters.

We heard that Minnie had to take a cheesecake break, as well...and luckily, we were the last ones to get to see her, so we made it through just in time!

Thanks guys for your answers! :goodvibes

For the International College Program I can check off if I want to be a Character Attendent. I also put Operations and Merch. I don't know how CM can take the heat in Jury in Fur Characters.

Thanks again!

This is not true. You can either be a performer or an attendant. Some people have been both but now it's one or the other, unless you transfer. New attendants are hired on as attendants with no prior training in performing.

Exactly. :)

Here's a few other examples:

-"Brer Rabbit is going back to his briar patch."
-"Robin Hood needs to return to Sherwood Forest."
-"Jiminy Cricket has to go see the Blue Fairy."
-"Tigger is going to grab a quick piece of birthday cake."
-"Minnie needs to power her nose."
-"Goofy is going to check on Max's homework."
-"Chip & Dale are going to get some acorns."
-"Scrooge McDuck has to go count his cash."
-"Lilo has to get to her hula class."
-"Pocahontas has to go meet John Smith."
-"The Queen of Hearts is going to check on her roses."
-"Baloo has to go back to the jungle."
-"Carl Fredrickson, Dug & Russell are going to check on their balloons."
-"The Country Bears need to go get ready for their show."

Similar things are done when a CM has to mention that a particular is not making appearances on a particular day. For example:

-"The 7 Dwarfs are busy working in their Daimond Mine."
-"Prince Eric is giving his dog Max a bath."
-"Shang is off fighting some Huns."
-"Jose Carioca had to go to a samba lesson."
-"Panchito is at a fiesta."
-"The 3 Little Pigs are busy rebuilding their houses again. The Big Bad Wolf won't stop blowing them down."

Just to give some ideas. :)

Character attendants are chosen like any other Disney position. You apply for it and if there is a need, then you will be considered for the role. I used to be an attendant and it is really fun working with all the characters and going to all the parks. Sometimes you will be with a group of characters but other times it will just be you and maybe 1 or 2 characters. What you say when the characters exchange is up to you. If the characters are breaking for a while you can just say that they are going in for a little bit and will be back for autographs and pictures at ______. It can be frustrating, though, when you have to cut the line off and the guests keep coming up and wanting to meet them and you have to tell the guests that the line is cut and to come back at such and such a time. The guests can get a little annoyed and will tell you anything to change your mind. You don't have to be a character to be a greeter but during orientation, you will wear head, hands and feet of a character to see what it is like for them. Let me tell you, it is something to behold. You will see exactly what kind of vision those characters have. Some of them have very little vision to see what is coming or what is around them.

jessie and woody have to go feed bullseye.

i liked when the attendants said something bc it stopped questions from my Dd like wow mickey sure does go potty alot doesnt he mommy lol

I was in Epcot during the holiday season and was waiting in line to take a picture with Donald in his sombrero. :lovestruc The CM told people that Donald needed to be at the tree lighting which was happening pretty soon.
