Trip report - Introduction and journey to Ashford
Cast:
Me (21 x2 plus extra) 4th trip
DH (21 x2 plus extra) 4th trip
DD 8 Loves Princesses, POC and BTM and Disney 4th trip
DGM (Grandma. My Mum) 76. 1st trip to DLP
Setting the scene.
The trip was a Birthday/Christmas present for DGM and Christmas present for DD. DGM knew about the trip but DD didnt know.
This was our 4th trip to DLP but first time at Christmas. DGM had never been to DLP but had been 4 times to WDW (including Christmas trip) but last visit was several years ago. DH and I had spent 2 Christmases at WDW several years ago and really liked the atmosphere. All the lights, music, decorations etc were wonderful
We were setting off on Boxing Day, driving to Ashford to stay in Travel Lodge overnight, getting an early shuttle through the tunnel on 27th and driving down to DLP where we were staying at DCR until 29th.
A lot of planning had been going on in secret over the last few weeks and we were looking forward to presenting DD with her present on Christmas Day.
We had bought her a new Cinderella suitcase and packed it ready to go. On top of all her clothes was a Christmas Minnie and a letter from Belle (her favourite) telling her about the trip. On Christmas Day she opened the present first and as I passed it to her I commented about it being heavy so that prompted her to open the case and look inside. She saw the letter and opened it and read it out loud. (It said she was going to DLP on Boxing Day) I then said "When are you going?" and she repeated "Boxing Day" but still didnt really seem to have clicked so I said "Boxing Day whens that?" and she suddenly said- "Its tomorrow!!!" She was then so excited and we were able to tell her all the plans that had been made in secret.
Boxing Day- Wed 26th
Cases had all been packed the day before and everything was ready to load into the car. DH went to collect DGM whilst DD and I got up and dressed. The boot was loaded and off we set about 10.30.
DD was still very excited and still amazed that we had been able to keep it all from her. We were all prepared for the cold weather with new fur lined boots, thermal vests, thick coats, hats, scarves, gloves and loads of layers however we were still unsure how DGM would cope with the cold and all the walking so had decided to take each day as it came and see what we could do. We had booked a character breakfast on 28th and Walts for evening of 28th and Blue Lagoon for lunchtime on 29th so at least we knew we would get some good meals however busy it was. We filled DD in on a lot of this on the way down to Ashford. The journey down was uneventful but the roads were very busy. I never usually go anywhere on Boxing Day and was amazed at how many people seemed to be obviously going somewhere until DH pointed out that a lot of it could be football traffic.
We stopped for a quick drink but decided to wait until we got to Ashford to have a meal.
We arrived about 4.30ish and checked in. We then went to Frankie and Bennys for a meal. GM had Salmon Fishcakes, DH had ribs, I had Chicken breast sandwich and DD had chicken burger. When we got the bill we realised DDs was free as there was a kids eat free offer on for boxing day.
We then settled down to watch TV and have an early night as we had to be up very early the next day to catch an early shuttle.
